Wifi adapter keeps turning off on Asus laptop

I have an Asus laptop with a Atheros AR9485 wireless network adapter. I've owned the laptop for a year and a half and never had a problem until the last 6-8 weeks.

The wireless adapter turns itself off randomly. I can be in the middle of something and my connection is gone. I click on troubleshooting and it tells me it is off, so I turn it back on and it will work for a while longer until it decides to do it again.

I have disabled all other network adapters. I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them. I don't know what is causing this. It all started after I hooked up a router (via ethernet) to set it up about 2 months ago. It was only connected for 20 minutes while I set it up, but ever since then my wifi adapter will not stay on. Like I said, it happens when I'm using the computer...not just when it's idle.

Any ideas what I could try?

    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hello,

Does your connection disappear at random times? You might want to take a look at my thread as we have possibly the same problem. If we do, we could help each other when finding the solution.

I have got win 7 64-bit on asus laptop as well.

Yes, completely random. There's no obvious thing causing it. Sometimes I can use my connection for an hour before it happens, then it can go out 3 or 4 times in a fifteen minute period. It's driving me crazy because I can fill out a form online and if it goes out when I hit send I lose everything! I should have noted that the wifi signal is fine because I have another computer and multiple phones, tablets, and TVs running and they NEVER lose signal.

And I've tried with two different wireless routers and it still happens. It's definitely something with this laptop causing the problem.

You can try going into Device Manager find the problematic wireless device via "Network Adaptors" right click to properties then to the Power Management tab, uncheck the option to allow Windows to turn off this device.

I can't imagine any other reason why it would turn itself off unless it's a hardware problem with the actual device.

Yes, that box was checked. I fixed it, so we'll see how it works the rest of the day. Thanks!

You might want to check for ipconfig at command prompt, like me.Check when your lease expires and see if you loose connection at that time. For me it does then..

Further on, i will just reply when i have the cause and solution to my/our problem. Good luck!

So far *crosses fingers* it hasn't happened again since I adjusted the power management option. I'll update again if anything changes.

That setting causes the same problem all the time, driver glitch I believe.

Just one more update in case someone finds this forum in the future. That did fix my issue! It hasn't turned the adapter off since I changed that! Thanks.
