Wireless Problems

Spent 6 hours with tech today trying to work out wireless problem. Just bought computer ten days ago and haven't been able to connect to any router, including the open source at the local Panera Bread shop. Sees the network, won't connect. Is there possibly just a connectivity problem with Windows 7 64 bit not being widely used at this point? I am beginning to wonder if most routers simply are not being updated to work with the new OS. I have already updated the firmware on my router (Westell 327W) but nothing. The tech also tried all the things previously suggested in these posts. I just want to send it back to Dell at this point....

As much as I feel sorry for everyone buying new laptops and having wireless problems I do see a possible silver lining. Maybe if Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba tech support gets swamped with calls and returns Microsoft will get off it's hands and FIX this issue.

Doing my best to get the word out there. I hope there is something that can be done. I find it hard to believe that I have had three techs spend over eight hours trying to get my new Dell Studio 1555 with Windows 7 to connect to a wireless router!!! This is progress?

Coincidence! I've got a brand new Dell Studio 1555 as well (with intel 5100 wifi adapter). Didn't have any problem connection it to my router, wifi internet works like a charm. But unfortunately i've got big problems with networking and filesharing. Terrible speeds (nowhere near wifi b/g, i'm talking 84kbs while transferring a 1,5 gb file), connection drops and bumps etc. I'm still figuring out if the problem is Windows 7, the 64 bits or my new router. I'll let you know as soon as i find out what's wrong.

I've just been talking to both microsoft and my ISP trying to resolve my problems with connecting to my wireless, neither has the answer, Microsoft say my computer is configured fine, ISP says my connection is fine.

Was just reading the comments/advice on here, haven't tried any of it yet but will do, recently had a new computer using Linksys WUSB600N adapter and trying to connect to BT Home hub V1.5 wirelessly, used to work fine on my old computer with XP and works fine when i had it in the room with the router connected with ethernet cable.

I've had problems with the Homehub before, i think its pretty useless, wondering if anyone knew any specific problems with compatibility or anything before i tried to other advice ?

I recently upgraded to Win 7, and at first everything with my wireless connection was fine, but recently, my connection has been very twitchy. It stays at a consistent 3-4 bars, but for increasingly long periods of time, no data is being transferred. I've also tried most of the things suggested here, but nothing really improved. What's going on? (i'll get system specs if you need em)

TO EVERYONE WHO WAS HAVING INTERMITTENT CONNECTION PROBLEMS: I believe I have found the solution, at least for those of us with REALTEK adapters. I was running windows 7 64 bit with a realtek 8185L adapter. Windows 7 indicated that this driver was UP TO DATE in the adapter properties window when I selected "Configure->Driver->Update driver" THIS WAS NOT THE CASE. I went to the realtek support website for my adapter (Realtek) and downloaded the windows 7 driver package. I've installed and everything has worked fine since then. I hope this helps!

I am having a slightly different issue, I can see the networks with a newly installed gigabyte gn-wp01gs pci wlan card but windows cannot connect to any of them including the unsecured one and the one I have a key on, I have attached the ipconfig, the driver details and the router details, does anyone have an idea of how to deal with the issue, I have messed with ipv6, static ip address, new drivers, removing and re-adding the network disabled firewall. The computer will not say anything different all it will show is 'windows was unable to connect to ...' when I have another pc connecting with the exact same network settings that were loaded on a flash drive and then transferred over

NOVEMBER 2005 Use a cross-over cable!!!

Backdrop....What a roller-coaster ride! My initial Netgear G router would crash continually once I hooked up my new Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7. It would even kill the hard-wired connection to a PC I have. A hard reset was required every time. After doing some research, all signs pointed to 'non-supported router' so I bought a Belkin N router.

I literally replaced the router (didn't swap out cat5 cables) and the craziest thing kept happening. At first glance, it worked just fine. I was able to configure my wireless connection no problem. After using it for a while, or after waking the laptop up from sleep mode, the connection no longer worked. It didn't even pick up on the broadcasted SSID. Although this time, the PC still worked. No changes on the NIC made a difference. But after troubleshooting this for days, I saw a pattern in the wireless connectivity. When the wireless connection died, I would go to the PC and fire up a browser (which still worked). After which, the wireless connection light on the router would turn on and the laptop was connecting again just fine. I could reproduce this error every single time! Further, when both machines were connected, if I unplugged the hardwired computer from the back of the Belkin, the wireless connection would drop.

Long story short, I went into the Belkin packaging and replaced my current cat5 with the one supplied by Belkin. Sure enough, it worked! It required a cross-over cable!

I don't know if this is true of all wireless routers, but if you are not using a cross-over cable, try it! It has worked for me!

Good to hear you got it solved. Just for the record your right in that you will need a crossover cable to connect "unlike devices" such as computer to router. Strait-through cables are used to connect "like devices" or router to router.
