Limited Access Problem With Wireless Network

My laptop got disconnected from the electricity (with no battery) and when I started it, I could not get it to connect to the wireless network at home. It shows available networks but always gives “Limited Access” when I attempt to connect to my home network. Other devices (phones and laptops) are connected to the network and have no problems. I have tried the following with no result:

1. Restarted the router.
2. Changed the network password.
3. Restarted laptop with last good known configuration.
4. System restore in safe mode.
5. Checked windows update. The last update was a day before the problem started. The uninstall button is not enabled for this update.
6. Virus scan showed nothing.
7. Uninstalled the wireless adaptor driver and restarted the laptop.
8. Downloaded the latest driver for the wireless adaptor and installed it.
9. Disabled Windows Firewall.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this issue ?


My laptop is HP Pavilion g6 series with Windows 7 Professional (32bit).

You can try to update your router settings to change from dynamic to static IP address configuration, and set an IP address on the computer appropriately. Try to connect the laptop directly with an ethernet cable and check if it is connecting or not.

I tried your suggestions but they did not work. However, I have resolved the problem by repairing windows.

Even though it is fixed, the most likely culprit was no the "Defualt Gateway" was missing so windows declared it as a public network and would not allow connection.

Had you just added in your routers base IP address, usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (depend on how your router was first set up) all would have worked again. When windows sees no Default gateway it always declares a Public network and will then show "Limited."

By repairing windows it assigned the Gateway and that's why it worked after the repair.
