How to get wifi from my computer?

If I am using a laptop/desktop/mac computer that is connected to the internet via an ethernet cable (the internet comes from the ethernet cable). Is there a way to get wifi from the computer? Maybe connect some device to the computer to make it become a wifi provider? I was wondering how to could get wifi/internet for my smartphone through the computer?

    Thanks

I am sure it should be possible to use you Mobile Phone .. But that would involve a cost .. So not such a good idea as you already have Internet available ..

I do what you are trying to do. I use a ASUS PCE-N15 Wireless PCI-E Adapter and then use the software that comes with the adapter. It's called software AP mode. Its set up a wireless hotspot which your smartphone can connect to.
