    Cannot set password for Homegroup

I have two windows 7 systems on Homegroup, and I am being asked to input a password when I try to access the systems. I did not set an initial password, but I followed instructions to Change/View passwords. Clicking on View password does not work and trying to Change password even using the suggested password does nothing except flash an extremely brief message which is impossible to read.

How can I set a password to allow these systems to communicate. They could in the past communicate and share files, what has changed?

You could try creating a new homegroup and setting a password when you create the homegroup.
To create a new homegroup, you need to leave the current homegroup from each of the computers.
Here is a tutorial by Brink:
    Homegroup - Leave

You should then be able to create a new homgroup.

    Homegroup - Create

Here's another tutorial by Brink that might help with troubleshooting:

I had to go into Peernetworking and delete files to be able get a network password. Now the secondary system is giving me a message cannot setup a home workgroup on this computer went into peernetworking and deleted files and ran troubleshooter but still having problems getting home network set up on that computer. Wondering if my router/switch is causing problems.

I've never used "Peernetworking", is this what you are referring to ?
    What is Peer Networking?

I would "re-boot" the Router, Switch, and Modem to see if that fixes issues.
For that I would turn off all connected devices, disconnect power from the Router, Switch, and Modem for at least 10 seconds, reconnect the power to restart them, then boot PCs/devices and see how things work.

If that doesn't fix things, I'd look into a RESET of the Router, Switch, and/or Modem.
Doing this will reset the device to FACTORY settings, so you WILL LOSE any configuration changes.
There's often a "Reset Button" on the device.
For that info you need to find the manual for your specific devices.
You can google for these, or post the make and model of your Router, Switch, and Modem, and I can search for the Manuals.

If your ISP installed and configured your Home Network and devices, you should ask them for assistance.

Your primary issue now seems to be Networking, not HomeGroup.
For that I suggest using these instructions by 2xg:
Basic Requirements Before Posting your Networking Thread

Do you have a Restore Point and/or System Backup Image from before the problems started ?

I am referring to the peernetworking folder as in the following instructions posted on the forum:
If you can't leave the homegroup, then:

    1) Delete all files in the hidden C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking folder on the PC you want to leave the homegroup.

    2) Restart the PC.

    3) Try the tutorial again to see if you are able to leave the homegroup now.

Deleting these files allowed to met get a password on the initial computer. The secondary computer is where I am having trouble even after deleting files in peernetworking folder. I will look into reseting the router etc. when I can get around to it.
