    Windows 7 Homegroup Issue

I have a desktop and laptop running Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium.

The Desktop is connected via cable and my Laptop is connected to my network via wireless.

I can connect to the internet no problem from both. I am able to "Create a HomeGroup" on both my Desktop and Laptop. The issue I have is I am unable to join a homgroup if I create one on my desktop and try to join using my laptop. (I am only given the option to create a homegroup).

I have researched the forums, and I do have IPv6 enabled on both my desktop and my laptop.

I have ran the self diagnostic check through windows 7. None of the suggestions worked.

I have a Wireless Netgear Router, DSL SpeedStream Modem and Vonage VoIP modem....

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank You.

I'm assuming your router is providing IP addresses via DHCP, and that both computers belong to the same octet - ie: 192.168.0.xx.

Here's my suggestion: on both computers, leave the existing homegroup via the Network and Sharing Center, then reboot both computers. Return to the Network and Sharing Center on both computers, but create a homegroup on only one of the computers. Next, reboot that computer. Verify the homegroup is listed in the Network and Sharing Center. Now, move to the other computer. See if the new homegroup is available to join.

Yes, keggobeer my router is providing the IP address through DHCP. (192.168.1.X)

I created a homegroup with my work desktop, did the restart... turned on the laptop... when i go to homegroup with my laptop I only get the option to create a homegroup... I am connected through my wireless router, but it doesn't recognize the homegroup created on my desktop....

    Any other ideas are appreciated.

    1. On Main Computer, leave whatever homegroup you started.
    2. On Main Computer, Reboot
    3. On Main Computer, Go and start a new Homegroup
    4. On Main Computer, Write down temp password
    5. On Main Computer, Reboot
    6. Go to Second Computer and Leave what Group your on there (if your in no group, skip this step)
    7. On Second Computer disconnect from the Internet
    8. On Second Computer, connect back to your internet
    9. On Second computer, go to network and sharing center
    10. On Second Computer,Wait till you see joinable network
    11. On Second Computer, type in temp password
    12. There you go.

I tried those steps before... I tried them again... When I hit step ten my only option is to create a network on my laptop.

    There is a registry hack that could help. Do this on both machines;

Click Start. Search for regedit and press enter and press OK

    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Navigate to SYSTEM
    Navigate to CurrentControlSet
    Navigate to Services
    Navigate to Tcpip6
    Navigate to Parameters

Right click on DisabledComponets and select modify. In the value data field, enter "0" without the quotations and press OK.

It may be that only one computer has the DisabledComponents key. This is the one that is causing the troubles. Not to worry if one of the computers doesn't have this key. Just edit the one that does.

Don't forget to reboot your machines!! Should work now. Thanx to member shawn10 for his original post regarding this issue.

I navigated to that location, and I have no disabled components.
