Remote Desktop Connection intermittently fails to connect

I am trying to connect remotely to a desktop computer that has Windows 7 Professional using a VPN from home. The VPN always connects but sometimes the Remote Desktop fails to connect to the desktop. The desktop is on. So one day I can connect to it all day. The next day I cannot. The Remote Desktop Connection states to 'try again later'. I tried to ping the computer and the request times out.

I am wondering if there is some setting on the desktop that I need to change so that it will reliably allow me to connect to it.

    Thanks.

    Welcome to Seven Forums,

Is your connection issue wireless? How's your connection directly connected to a modem or router?

Yes. My connection is wireless. My local modem is NetGear. I am not sure what the company uses as a router. I am not sure how the Remote Desktop Connection fits with the VPN. So, I am sorry if this question is stupid. But if the VPN can always connect and connect quickly, why won't the Remote Desktop Connection always work. Doesn't the Remote Desktop application use the same infrastructure to connect to my desktop?

Not really..... Remote desktop allows access and control to a specific computer, while VPN allows access to a shared network resources.

Can you try connecting wired or/and bypass a router if there's a separate Modem? What is your bandwidth? Check for any conflicting wireless channels as well by running Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector tool.
