Wireless Adapter says it's working but does not detect any network

Hey I have a laptop that just got given to me and the internet is working through the Ethernet cable but is not through the wifi connection. I know that the router is working (I have my phone hooked up) I checked the drivers and updated them, uninstalled the adapter and let it be put back on its self. I have rolled back the drivers and updated it. I have tried a system restore point also. The laptop has connected to the internet through wifi before.. Still a red "X". I'm getting a little irritated

What adapter is in your device manager? That laptop shipped with intel and atheros adapters.

Some machines disable the wifi when connected to an ethernet cable. Unplug the ethernet. Open the Device Manager. Right click on the wifi adapter and select properties, go to the ipv4 properties, click on the advanced button, add the Default Gateway address so the adapter knows what to communicate with.

it was shipped with a Atheros AR5005G. When I booted up the Ethernet cable was not plugged in it just the Wifi bar with a big red X on it.
