    Setting Permissions

    Hello everyone!
This is my first post to this forum, I hope I get to hang around.

Well, I have a couple issues going on with Offline Files. Let's try to make it as easy as possible....

Say I have folder A in computer A (desktop). Folder A has many subfolders.

So I "make available offline" folder A in my laptop. Files sync, coolers.
I go to a coffee shop and when I go to open one of the subfolders but it denies me access, claiming I don't have permission. Although the permission in the desktop's folder A is set to Full Control for "Everyone". I have also right-click/Share/Homegroup Read/Write. So what I have had to do is go into Advanced Sharing, check the Share box. Now in the laptop I can open the folder, but many times it won't allow me to open files within it.

Anyway, this all has to do with permissions. Here's the kicker: I can set permissions for users within the desktop, but if I try to change the "Location" in an attempt to find my laptop and find my laptop's user-name, or even if I try to write a path, it can't find my laptop. If I click the Location button, only my desktop shows. Although my laptop is part of the Homegroup set up in my desktop and they are all connected through the same wireless network.

    Ayayay, Microsoft make it easy!

Any idea how to tap my laptops domain so I can set a permission for my laptop user for the folder in my desktop?

    Thanks!

Are you using a workgroup or a network? Are all computers running Windows 7? Have you thoroughly reviewed the Windows Help and Support for offline files?

I've been dealing with this problem for about 2 weeks now, trying to find nooks and crannies where i could find a fix.
I'm not a basic user neither, I actually manage 2 labs with over 60 stations. Although Macs, but still.

they are set as a Workgroup which is how the Homegroup sets them up. Again, I just can't find my laptop under Locations. Both computers should be wide open to each other, they are under the same home network.
    Any ideas?

    or other Offline file guides?

    Thanks!

    yes
I actually have 4 computers at home, 2 desktops and 2 laptops.

All were reconfigured with clean installs of W7 RTM 7600.

    Anyone?

I think the issue is that the Homegroup is, by default, a read only configuration. You are allowed to read files from a shared location, but not write to them.

Instead of using Homegroup, try using only the workgroup. Have each computer leave the homegroup, and then verify that all of the computers belong to the same workgroup. Reboot all computers, then try using the offline folder feature.

I do not have my computers using homegroup, since I have Vista computers in my house and I'm running a Windows Home Server, so I can't do any real testing to see if I can replicate the problem. If I have some spare time, I'll "break" my network and see if I have any problems with offline folders and homegroups.

    I'll try that.

Maybe there's a conflict between Homegroup and the Workgroup set up.

I'll try that and post back.... although i left the homegroup on the laptop and synched one folder and the same permission issues were going on. Maybe I need to drop the Homegroup on the desktop as well.

    Anyone else?
