Wifi internet problem - download speed slow

I connect my PC to my router using a wifi dongle (I wish I could use Ethernet but it's just not practical). My router is a D-Link Wireless AC1900, my dongle is an Asus USB-AC56. They connect strongly, usually at 585Mbps. My incoming internet connection is passed through from the modem to the router. The modem isn't broadcasting a Wifi signal. My internet is a fibre connection provided by talktalk.

When testing with Speedtest, my iPad, mobile phone, Macbook and other devices typically see down speeds of 40-60Mbps and up speeds of 15-19Mbps, which is roughly what they should. (I mean, I'm paying for 80Mbps, but whatever.) My PC will occasionally get the same, but very often the download is erratic and slow, something like 1-5Mbps, and I don't know how to rectify it. (The upload isn't a problem, so what I'm usually getting is an up speed that's 4-15x my down speed.)

The problem doesn't seem to be with the router or modem, given that my other devices are getting good speeds, and it doesn't help to troubleshoot through Windows because as far as my PC's concerned, it's getting an internet connection, it doesn't care about the speed, so it doesn't suggest any solution.

I have tried various combinations of restarting the computer, unplugging the dongle, restarting AND unplugging, and every once in a while after being plugged back in it starts to reach the 40-60Mbps range, but there's no consistency to it. (And I'm scared to turn the computer off because if I do it'll probably lose the speed again, but I don't want to have to keep the damn thing on all the time.)

I use Kaspersky Internet Security, which is a recent purchase, but I don't think that's the issue because I've occasionally been able to see the higher speeds while using it.

Do you have any ideas of what I can do to figure this out and get my PC to reliably see the down speeds it should?

Did you try removing and reinstalling the Asus adapter drivers?

I have now tried reinstalling the drivers, but am not seeing any improvement unfortunately.

I'm not very familiar with Asus adapters, nor with the European regulations, but looking at the screen you posted, your adapter is using channels, which overlap with the St Pauls Club signal, namely 40 36 on 5Ghz and 6 2 on 2.4Ghz. See if you can change those to different ones in your wireless access point channel settings, which should be found on the WAP's settings page.

Looking at Wikipedia, you may have channels 44 48 available in the UK for 5Ghz, so change them to those ones. At 2.4Ghz you should change to anything but 1, 2, 6 or 11.

Unfortunately I haven't been having any luck with any of the ideas so far. What I can tell you, which I didn't make clear above, is that my router puts out a 2.4GHz and a 5GHz signal, and the 5GHz is the one I want to use. The 2.4GHz (IanInternets on the image above) is stable and doesn't have a problem with the download speed, it's only the 5GHz one that does.

I appreciate that if this ultimately seems to be unresolvable, I can rely on the 2.4GHz signal, but I can't see a good reason why the 5GHz one shouldn't be working. And I would like to use it if possible, especially given that I do a lot of in-house file transfers and the transfer rate is significantly increased on the 5GHz signal.

Would you post a screenshot of the Xirrus with the changed channels?

Certainly. Currently I'm seeing 4.7Mbps down and 19.45Mbps up through the 5GHz channel.

Do you have any QoS management, packet priority, etc that can alter the speeds of a client? I would try resetting the router to defaults and see if it helps. I get all of my 300 Mbps internet using my ASUS PCE AC 56 wifi adapter on my laptop
