Strang error in accessing internet wirelessly

hey guys, trying to sovle my brothers issue on his sony vaio laptop which is a few months old. I am a bit geeky but have reached my limits here.

Im on his laptop now and it only works with the LAN in and wont for wireless. below is some CMD testing. have turned off windows firewall and uninstalled mcafee.
I saw ipv6 is disconnected somewhere in the settings?
i deleted all his wireless profiles and then connected to our network again.
note, by router is od and not the one specifically from the provider. It works though, for both my mothers and my laptops... so there is something wrong with his. I dont know if there is some funky sony software profile messing things up??

Apreciate any help. I have a load of work to do and will be left alone if i cna solve this wireless issue (so he doesnt have to have the lan cable to get his WOW on...).

When IPv6 says disconnected it means that IPv6 isn't accessing the internet, this is by design because the IPv6 protocol is only used on the LAN for Homegroups.

Are the other two wireless machines using Windows 7? If there aren't using Windows 7 then your router may need a firmware update in order to work correctly with Windows 7.

Yes, we are all on 7.

It might help if you compare the ipconfig results from the other working machines. Look for any differences in the default gateway or DNS server.

If there are any differences it may help to type in the correct default gateway and DNS server info into the IPv4 properties window on the problem machine. McAfee can also cause problems in this area.

Ok, in the first read out the DNS server is listed as 192.168.101.1 which isn't typical because usually the DNS will show up the same as the default gateway which is 192.168.154.1. You can also go into your routers settings and use an alternate DNS like google DNS which works well for me.

In the second picture of the working connection the DNS shows up as 192.168.154.1 which is the same as the default gateway and is typical for a working connection.

So the problem machine isn't getting the same DNS assigned to it as the working machine for some reason. I'm not sure why this is happening but it may help to go into your IPv4 properties and type in the DNS the other machine is using.

The picture below shows you where you can type in the DNS or the default gateway of your router. I would manually type in both of them in you case on the problem machine.

i noticed there was something was wrong with that number but couldn't figure out why it would be different to mine. fixed it.
What happened was, when he was in canada he "messed around with it" to make a profile... go figure. The dns was hard-coded to the wrong number hence, why the numbers didn't tally.

My pleasure greko, glad I could help. I believe he must have entered that rogue DNS into the IPv4 properties window at some point, so unless someone goes in a changes it then it would just stay there and prevent that machine from using the proper DNS.
