Wireless problem!! Help

HI,

I've been having a problem connecting to a wireless hotspot. The hotspot is located next door to my apartment in a store and i do have permission to connect to as it is public. im just lucky to be close enough that i can connect from my living room. the problem is that for some reason my hp laptop refuses to connect to this router giving me the message "Unable to connect" (duh) and that is it. i cant for the life of me figure out why as my desktop, my ipod touch, and my brothers hp laptop can all connect with a good signal. i have everything set to auto on the adapter as far as ip and servers are concerned. this is the output for ipconfig /all on my desktop connected wirelessly. (sorry. not sure if that's even a word.) im really at a loss here, so any help would be great. it just dosent make sense that everything else hooks right up but not this laptop.

nope. i just see the network and click connect. that's all i have to do with my other devices. it's unsecured so no passwords or anything. still working on it. nothing yet.

still looking for an answer to this problem. my sister just stopped by with her laptop and it to connects right to this hotspot. i cant figure it out. my laptop just refuses although it sees the connection. any one have any ideas. my laptop has a broadcom abg wireless. it's an hp dv6000.

Try spoofing the physical address (mac address) by double clicking on the adapter in device manager. Go to advanced tab. The setting will be there. Enter random numbers and letters using 0,1,A,B. Doesn't matter what you put, just use those. Save. Disable then re-enable the adapter and try to connect.

If you have mdnsresponder.exe in the task manager, uninstall the Bonjour service by Googling how to.

the problem is this homegroup thing. I had the same problem with my router at home.
Just another MS PITA in the name of security. I can't even offer a good answer cuz I just got my windows 7 yesterday, but..... I'll be back.....

I know this maybe something you have already tried. But please just shut down your laptop and wait briefly and restart it immediately attempt to connect to the hotspot and let me know if that makes any difference at all.

gave these a shot still nothing. and im not using homegroups, im just trying to connect to a hotspot. i just dont get it. my laptop seems to be the only device with the problem. ive even gone as far as doing a clean install of the os. didnt work either. any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks

according to the ipconfig stats in your original post I see that your DHCP lease was obtained two days ago and should have expired yesterday. If your sister is still there check her laptop ipconfi info and see if it is anything close to yours. In the mean time to an ipconfig /release and then an ipconfig /renew and let us know

those stats were from the other day when i first posted this thread. ive reconnected a few times since with my desktop. also i cant release/renew because i cant get a connection. just to be clear im posting this from my desktop, which is connected wirelessly to the very hotspot that i cant get connected to with my laptop. so i know the problem is with the laptop. i just cant seem to narrow it to either a software or hardware problem. the desktop is running xp and is about 5 years old. (but still kicking) i have a linksys 80211b usb wireless adapter hooked to it. the laptop is hp dv6000 with broadcom 80211abg. it's about 3 years old. its running win 7 release candidate. i have win 7 final ordered but havent received it yet. thanks guys for all the suggestions. if any other ideas please let me know.
