Internet dies for a few minutes when downloading large files quickly

    Hi,

when I download large files (>a few GB) without throttling my download speed to about 300kB/s my internet connection dies for a few minutes. At regular downloadspeed (~1.6 MB/s) it dies at around 500MB, at slower speeds it seems to get a bit further before halting. (600kB/s gets me to around 750MB, 300kB/s finished the last download successfully, file was ~3GB)

I remain connected to the router (packets received/sent still going strong) but I can't access the internet and if I use the windows troubleshooter it tells me IP configuration was invalid or default gateway unavailable.

I googled the problem and the only tips I found were "throttle your download speed" (works, but that's not a good solution) and "disable 'allow other network users to disable connection'" which did nothing.

I get the same problem on my laptop, but when the internet on my PC is crashed I can still access the web from my laptop and vice versa.

Thanks in advance for you help!

My bet goes to router :)

Is your modem and router separate devices? Would your connection work if you plug the modem to computer directly?

I guess some routers have a passthrough configuration, if above is not feasible.

If all above fail try factory reset on the router. Make sure you have all the configuration details noted down, you will need them after the reset.
