win7 pc won't accept credentials across network

I have a home network with win7 pc's - a mix of home and pro. I used to be able to connect to all the computers across the network OK. but recently, one win7 home pc has become recalcitrant, refusing to allow other pc's on the network to log on to it. it keeps asking for credentials (user/password), but rejects what I know are the correct credentials and throws the "use another account" box on the screen. I know they're the correct user and password because I can log on and off the pc locally.

I gotta be doing something wrong, but heck if I know what it is. perhaps someone in the big brain-trust here knows?

Be sure that the User "name" you are using is correct. If you changed it since building the computer.

I ran into a problem when I renamed my wife's computer to "Karen" (when I setup the computer I named it "user1"). So when I see her computer on the network it says Karen, but the credentials for network access are still looking for "user1". Run "net user" at a command prompt to see what the system thinks is the User name.

that was it. even though the log in user name for the pc is "musicpeople", the network user name is "trashgroup-7mp," which is the full computer name given at setup. but I have no clue how that happened. all the other pc's use the log in user name to access shares. any idea on how that can happen and if it can be changed?

Windows 7 has a Public Share user. Anything you put there can even not need a password. If you share something owned by "Kevin" in his documents, you will need to login as Kevin to access them. If "Karen" is the user who is sharing files from her documents, then you must log in as Karen. If you change computer names, then you need to re-supply the credentials.

You can change or update credentials from the Control Panel, instructions here:

Store passwords, certificates, and other credentials for automatic logon

If your issue is solved, please mark this thread as Solved at the very top. Thanks and good luck!
