2 computers on same network cannot ping each other-how to troubleshoot

Hi all. I have 2 computers (a laptop and desktop) that are both on the same network. They are both connected via LAN cables to my router. They can each ping the router, but cannot ping each other. I am wondering how to troubleshoot further.

Desktop: Win 7 64-bit. Returns "Request timed out" when trying to ping
Laptop: Win 7 32-bit. Returns "Destination host unreachable" when trying to ping the desktop.

Is there any way (perhaps enabling some logs in Windows, or in my router, or a 3rd party application) that can help me pinpoint exactly where each signal is failing?

    Some More Info

    • Both networks are set to type "Home."

    • Neither are on a homegroup. I cannot get them to join the same homegroup when I try. I can create a homegroup on one machine, but the other does not see it, and only wants to create its own.

    • I have reset my router and network adapaters many times, and rebooted all devices many times.

    • Both have network discovery and file and printer sharing enabled.

    • Both can ping the router without issue, and both can connect to the internet without issue.

Lastly, here are my ipconfig's on each machine:

    Thanks for the reply

That was just a posting error on my part actually. I pasted the incorrect IP config results. The correct IP config results indicate that both are on wired connections.

Anyway, I have resolved this issue for now. It appears that when both machines connect to the router via wifi, they can ping each other without issue. But when I move my desktop to a wired connection, the pings exhibit this behavior. I will try to isolate further.

Doesn't matter if they are wired or wireless as long as on the same network. (192.168.1.0/24 in this case). Check your firewall settings, disable as a test. Also check your router settings for anything relevant.

(I had my friend's network set as HomeGroup (created on a wireless Win8 desktop) and joined it with wired Win7. Both can ping each other.)
