Comcast Connect Speed

Hello,

Live outside of Boston, and have Comcast broadband for internet.

The little icon of the screen bottom show my connection speed as 100.0 Mbps.

a. is this in bits or Bytes ?

b. For a new contemplated router, will the "G" versions handle this speed fully, or should I get an "N" to avail myself of (all) the connect speed being provided, which I guess Comcast considers "high" ?

c. Just out of curiosity; do you consider this as a "high" connect speed ?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi bob and welcome to sevenforums

the 100Mb (small "b"= bits) says thats what the lan could do.

Bits

either. you are not going to get anyway near that from comcast. You can find out by going to speedtest.net and running their test.

Comcast usually has between 5-15 Mbps. so even if your internal lan can run at 100 between the computers on you network you wont get that from the internet.

Hope this helped and let us know if you need help

From OP For Ken, et al. And A Router-Printer Question

Hi Ken,

Thanks for info.

I'm glad you corrected me; I always thought that the speed shown in the icon on the screen's bottom was what was actually being supplied by Comcast.
Live and learn.

So, a G Router would be just fine. True ?

How about another one -
I'm a real neophyte with Routers.

Shortly, I will have two PC's in the same room.
Will be getting a wireless router for them.

Let's call one the "old one" (XP), and the other the "new one" (Windows7)

I will have my very basic printer hard-wired up via USB to the new one.
(It's Not one of the wireless enabled printers).

This new one PC will also probably be hard-wired into the Router, as it is so closely located that having it communicate wirelessly would probably be silly.

Will the old PC still be able to print via the new PC (assuming it's on) ?

e.g., can the old PC access the new PC via the wireless Router connection, and command the new one to use the printer (via it's USB wired connection) ?

Sort of like using the Router in reverse, I guess.

Thanks again for the help, and putting up with my dumb questions.

Best regards,
Bob
