    cannot connect to internet

i5 dell laptop, windows 7, drivers installed. Icon shows connect to internet, but says 'no internet access'. I've tried many things including windows troubleshooting. This is for wireless, but I have the same problem testing on Ethernet. Only option at this point seems like a win 7 reinstall which I'd like to avoid. I've tried to do an install on spare h.d., and that CAN connect.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Don`t reinstall yet, work on it some more.

If you have the same problem with ethernet then check your modem/router does it have a green light lit up where it says WAN or does it have something like a globe, maybe just reboot the router or modem.

Do you have any other devices ? Do they get out to the web ?

    cannot connect

The router.modem is all green and has been rebooted several times. I can connect with my tablet (that's where I am right now) and with my wife's macbook. So it seems that the problem is in the one win 7 installation. BTW, thanks for talking me thru this problem.

Is this a new install? What security software are you using (AV/Firewall/other)?
Can you connect in Safe Mode with Networking?

Its a recent install, about 1 month ago. It took me 2-3 days to accomplish.

Safe mode w network does not work. Same problem. ,'limited connectivity'.

    Any security software then?

What do you get for in cmd:
    Code:
    ipconfig -all
What is the network location set to? (Home/work/public) in Network and Sharing Center

I have more services to check but check these at least (PC is shut down):
    - DHCP client
    - DNS client

At least you know the hardware is ok on PC. So it`s most likely windows as you suspect.

You haven't stated which security software you are using yet.

Run in cmd (copy and right click paste in cmd window):
    Code:
    ipconfig -all |clip
This will copy the results to the clipboard (nothing will be shown), come back here and paste (CTRL+V).

Also, run services.msc and check whether the following services are started (not all of them are related to Internet connection though).
    - Computer Browser - Manual
    - DHCP Client - Automatic
    - DNS Client - Automatic
    - Network Connections - Manual
    - Network Location Awareness - Automatic
    - Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - Automatic
    - Server - Automatic
    - TCP/IP Netbios helper - Automatic
    - Workstation - Automatic
    - IPsec - Manual
    - Network List Service - Automatic
    - Network Store Interface Service - Automatic
