no internet after Windows xp reinstall

I reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell dimension 5100C desktop from the CD and installed all the drivers after malware locked up the system.
Under Network Connections, it shows connected.
When I try to connect to the internet the browser shows "The page can not be displayed"...
I did the reinstall about a year ago with the same software with no problems.

This is a Windows 7 forum not an XP one, but anyway. In network connections right click the connection then click repair see if this resolves the issue?
If not go to start > run > type 'cmd' > when the black box opens type 'ping Google' let us know the results.

    Thanks

I tried repair several times. It shows "WINDOWS FINISHES REPAIRING YOUR CONNECTION". Try it again.
    Still no connection.
I pinged Google and receives the message "Destination Host unreachable" 3 times.

You might wanna try and change the DNS your machine is connected to like this:

    1. Click the Start menu, select Control Panel
    2. Windows XP – Find the Network Connections icon and open it (If you don’t see icons and in the left hand, top part of the window there is an Option to “Switch to Classic View”).
Windows Vista – Click “Network and Internet“, then “Network and Sharing Center“, and open “Manage network connections“.
    3. Now you will need to open the “Properties” dialog for your main Internet connection. In this example, it is a wireless network. On your system, this may be a dial-up connection, a DSL connection, a Cable connection, etc… Right click on the icon to invoke the menu, and click the “Properties” option.
    4. Next, in the “Connection Properties” dialog that appeared, you will need to scroll down and highlight the “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” (don’t click on the “check box” as this will disable this protocol). Once the Protocol is highlighted, click on the “Properties” button. This will open a dialog for the “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties”
    5. If the “Obtain DNS Server automatically” section is in use, you will need to change it to “Use the following DNS server addresses” and then click on the “Advanced” button. If there are already addresses in the “Preferred DNS server” and “Alternate DNS server” sections, simply click on the “Advanced” button. Insert here two or more

    Cheers

If you can ping an address then changing your DNS is a waste of time.

Try going to start > run > 'cmd' > in the black box type 'ipconfig /release' then once its completed type 'ipconfig /renew'

    Hopefully this will resolve it.

By the way you said that it displayed the above message 3 times, normally when you ping you get 4 messages, what did the 4th one say?

Edit, could you post a screenshot of a CMD window with "ipconfig /all"?

Hang on, what is the problem?

The ping shows 0% loss when sending the packets.

Can you please attach a text file or screenshot that shows this problem of pinging google.

You can ping an IP address, but you cannot ping (resolve) URLs. That sounds like a DNS issue.

Although - intentionally pointing W7 to a bad DNS IP, does not get me "Destination Host unreachable".

    I see:

no internet after Windows xp reinstall-dns.png

I don't have XP to test right now.

The Internet explorer version is 6. I guess it is to old to work.
I tried downloading Internet explorer 7 and 8 from Microsoft, but most are 64 bit not the 32 bit on my system or for different operating systems.
Some sites for downloading shows that they were unsafe.
