Can't connect directly to modem after router is unplugged

I use a cable modem ( Motorola Surfboard SBV5120 ) and an ASUS router ( RT-N10E ).

If I remove the router and try to connect my comptuer directly through the modem, I get limited connectivity and it can't connect. If I plug the router back in the setup, my connection is fine ( kinda of, because my rotuer gives me some errors from time to time).

I've read that it might have something to do with MAC adresses. I have the mac adress of my ethernet card from cmd -> ipconfig /all. What do I need to do with it?

I feel that my network runs better directly from the modem and I don't need the wifi up all the time. That's why I want to connect through modem only. And my routers gives me some error about not setting the right connection type (static/automatic...) which I can't get rid of!

If it matters, two days ago a friend asked me to test with newly bought router. I replaced my own with it and got his running. Then I swapped back my own and the problems started to happen.

I'm begging for help, please! I rebooted the modem 2 times from the physical button with a needle, uninstalled network card drivers and I tried many times to unplug the modem from the wall.

And this is the error my routers gives me. I've tried to switch things in the settings but with no succes. image

Hello and welcome icatalin personally I think your problem lies in that you have a dual setup I always use a modem/router and then hubs if I want to extend that.

Of course it is your budget but I would be inclined to buy an all in one modem/router they are not that expensive now though I don't know about where you are but for about $40 out here I can can get a decent one. I do like the TP-Link brand and have had mine for over five years now.

I know this is the price out here but something like this would do you well if you are just an average emailer and browser

Plus the support from TP-Link is very good.
