    Advice on Default Gateway

Hi All.. looking for some advice..

I'm not a noob, though this may sound like kind-of a noob question.. but an issue that I have never had to deal with has come up, and I would like some advice as to which option to choose..

I am upgrading my router. My new router has a different default gateway than the old router (.1.1 vs. .0.1, respectively)

Should I change the default gateway on the router itself to match the default gateway on each pc and device on the network to match that of old router, or should I change the default gateway in the network settings on all the pc's and devices on the network to match that of the new router?

Is one option a better choice than the other, or does it not matter? In all my time dealing with networks/routers/etc. I've never run across this situation with different default gateways.. I guess because I was always partial to Netgear (192.168.0.1), and now I am moving to Cisco (192.168.1.1).

    Thanks in advance!

It doesn't really matters, the end result would be the same in each case. Computers using DHCP to automatically pick an IP address will in fact ask the router itself and configure themselves to match the change. For those with manually chosen configurations you need to change them yourself, but the end result is equivalent.

The only situation in which it would matter is if you'll keep both the old and newer routers together, in that case each one needs its own unique IP address to avoid conflics, hence you need to give a different one, no choices here. But if the new device completely replaces the old, which goes offline, either approach if fine.
