Unkown computers showing in windows network

    Hello,
I handle the IT where I work. We are on a peer to peer network with a dell server for data storage, there are 16 computers on our network 8 with win7 8 with XP. The router is a cisco rsv4000, with static IP add on the lan side. no wireless devices on the network. Broadband internet. The proble is when I bring up my network in windows 7 it first show the correct devices the continues to search and starts shownig bogus computers, alot of them with names like BU-10789856. This does not happen all the time, and the error does not show when I do net view in command promt. The XP computers on our network are not affected.
    Any Help, thanks
    Tim

    Hi GBR,
one of W7's quirks is that once network detection is enabled, it will search for any other devices in range, not neccessarily yours.
You could turn off the wireless function on the W7's, see if it changes, dont think dissabling network detection is a viable option.

Sorry forgot to mention that this issue comes and goes, none of our win7 pcs have wifi nics. My boss has a all in one win 10 pc that is probably wifi capable, but he assures me that wifi is turned off

Even if the Win7 machines are wired only, they could potentially see devices connected to any wireless access point on the network.

I may have found the issue, our QA admin has a VPN connection with one of our clients, the unknown computers showing up on our network are computers that are on our clients network. Would it be wise to turn off network discovery on the computer with the VPN connection. Thanks for your help
