weird problem No Network Adapter in either Win 10 or 8.1

so I have a Gigabyte MB GA-287X-D3H. This has onboard NIC. It worked fine on Win 8.1, then also under Win 10. After a BIOS issue (no image on monitor display) I did a CMOS reset and finally my picture was back again. However I had no LAN connection anymore. No blinking lights and Win 10 indicated:Windows could not find a driver for your network adapter.

So I reinstalled the driver from the Gigabyte CD, but still the same result. I then rolled back (system image) to the previous Win 8.1 version, but still the same problem.
My conclusion was that perhaps the onboard NIC might be broken. SO I ordered an Intel PCIExpress Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter. Installed it, disabled the onboard NIC in the BIOS and rebooted.
However still the same message, the card was not detected by Win 8.1.

I downloaded a driver from the Intel website, but no matter what I tried to install, still the same result. The Intel software indicated. "cannot install driver. No Intel adaptor detected or something

In device manager under Network Adapter there is no Intel device and when I scan for hardware changes, a window pops up and disappears immediately. And nothing changes ...
Under Network Adapters only some Microsoft ISTAP adapter, Kernel Debug adapter and Teredo tunneling pseudo interface are reported.

it's driving me crazy. why won't the onboard NIC not work anymore and even worse why isn't the Intel NIC via a pci-express card not recognized? Does anyone have good ideas to solve this?

suggestions are highly appreciated!
