im absolutely sure the firewalls are off. i keep heccking them. but thats another thing! anytime i do speedtest.net or w/e i get one really really good one. then the next time i do it it is awful!

ill get them in just a sec

Also, just to clarify, are you uploading or downloading anything on your laptop that could cause the bandwidth to go low?

Also, you said you were working with wireless, are you using wireless g? or wireless b? when its connected. You cannot just assume wireless g in every case.

If your router is on a 40 MHz bandwidth mode, switch it to 20MHz. Sometimes a 40 MHz bandwidth can cause a 75%-80% decrease in throughput.

Another thing to keep in mind is the type of encryption you use. Most 802.11n products will knock your throughput down by up to 80% if you use WEP or WPA/TKIP security. Try using WPA2/AES.

Another troubleshooting technique you can do is open up the wireless properties for the network connection. Look at the packets sent versus packets recieved, also note the connection speed.
