    Security key passphrase wrong

    Hello,

I recently installed Windows 7. I have a D-link DIR-615 wireless router in my living room and my computer has an adapter in order to connect to the internet. I had Windows XP and didn't experience any problems before. The problem is that when i typed my network password in (using windows 7), it said that the passphrase was wrong. I reseted my router and used the password and it worked just fine, so i dont think that its the router's or the adapter's fault. When i turned my PC on the next day, i experience the same problem. I cannot connect to my network. I was never asked to put my password in again to connect to the network when i was using XP and i cannot reset my router every time i turn my pc on cause there are other people in the house that are using the network. Other computers, laptops and my iphone can connect just fine. Is there a solution to this problem?

    Hi and welcome

Is it the router thats asking for the password or win 7 networking?

What does the password screen say and look like

    Thanks

    Same problem

Hello. I too have exactly the same problem - I have a D-Link DIR 615 and my Windows 7 machine is an HP IQ830UK. I am also running an XP machine on the same network with no problems (hence I can send this post) . Since upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 (free upgrade) my internet will not connect on the Windows 7 machine.

    So fat I have:

    Updated the HP Drivers
    Updated the NIC Driver
Reset the Router to the Factory Settings and started again.

    The drivers do squat.
When I reset the router the Windows 7 machine found the netword, set up a WPA2-Personal with AES encryption and gave me the Security Key. It then ran for about ten minutes as happy as larry before the Wi-Fi bar in the control panel said there was no connection. Internet was still working though.

I restarted the machine and I am back to square one - the machine can see the connections but is convinced I am providing the wrong Security Key even though it gave it to me! And I copied and pasted it so it isn't an inputting error.

Can anybody help because this is driving me up the wall!

    Cheers.

Hi. As I posted prior, I had this problem. I solved the problem by resetting my network with a new (slightly more complex alpha numeric) password. Windows 7 accepted the new password (security key) immediately. I hope this works for you.

    Fixed it . . . I hope

    Hello,

    I think I've sorted it.

Jmiggy - thanks for your help - I tried changing the password from xxxx-xxxx-xxxx to Xx00-xX0X-X00X-000x (you get the idea) and again without hyphens but it just wasn't having it unfortunately. Appreciate the advice though.

At the urging of the lovely, if slightly gormless, people at HP I reinstalled Windows 7. When I was doing the initial update after install I noticed this little beauty waiting in the optional update queue:

Ralink Technology, Corp. - Network - 802.11n Wireless Lan Card

Now I've had trouble with Windows flagging up updates that are not for my computer before, namely a nVidia Graphics Card driver which had absolutely nothing to do with my system and turned my very expensive computer into a fancy paperweight.

Since you can't trust Microsoft I went with a hunch and rolled back the last update in safe mode which expunged that driver, as well as everything else. I then updated again but without the above spanner in my works. Everything seems to be working okay now.

Manos 87 - If you've got the same problem as me, go into safe mode (keep hitting F8 while the computer's loading up) and roll back to a restore point just after you installed Windows 7. Hopefully it'll get rid of that driver and t'internet will connect as usual. Update as usual but without that driver. If that's not working, I think you might have to reinstall Windows 7 which is a pain, and just make sure the above driver isn't selected when it does it's initial update - if you right click on it and select 'hide' it should never come back up.

It seems to be running again at the moment. If it all goes pear shaped again I'll let you know. Hope it helps.

I also encountered the same problem after updating my Windows Vista to Windows 7. Before, I can connect with my Belkin N1 Vision Wireless router, but after updating my OS to Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, I can't connect to the network.

It says that passphrase is incorrect even if it's obviously correct. I tried to remove the password in my router and I can connect just fine. But if there's a password, WPA2 AES, I can't connect.

Still, I can connect as Guest (feature of Belkin), using the same password. What's weird though is that I can't connect to the main SSID when I'm using Windows 7. O__O.

This is really really weird. I also tried to update my Wireless cards, and it's all up-to-date.

I have another Windows 7 in my laptop, and I can easily connect to my router.

The problem only occurs with the upgraded Windows 7. This is a free upgrade from HP. I think there's nothing wrong with the disc as it's genuine.

If anyone here solved this problem please help me.

    I tried...

    Resetting my router
    Updating my drivers
    Re-installing Windows 7
    Renaming my SSID

    But to no avail.

dont need to do any of that when you experiencing the security key problem, here is a quick and best way to solve it.

    First is basic.

Windows xp is an old OS, the best securiy type for xp is WEP, Mac also majorly support WEP, so as well your ipods, wireless cell phones & Printers, etc. so you see the difference, WPA PERSONAL & WPA 2 PERSONAL and others are majorly supported by windows vista and windows seven. yes wpa and wpa 2 personal are high end security types and gives you sliglty faster speed for wireless networks. where as the wep make your net little bit slower but gives you decent security and compatibility with major hardwares/products available in todays market.

    1) Open your router page from any of your computer, which is connected to the router using wired or wireless connection. (to do so open cmd, check your default gateway using ipconfig and type default gateway in your internet explorer's address bar, majorly the default gateways aree 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

    2) once the router page is open, proceed towards security tab, where you can change the password and security mode, select security mode as WEP and type your password 10 digits in key 1 or key 2 feild. make sure its only numbers.

    3) save settings close internet explorer, you can also use any other browser,, such as mozilla. (make sure you also remmeber your network name /SSID after this step or write it down exactly on peice of paper).

    4) proceed to control panel & then network and sharing center/ network and internet connections. here, the steps change depending on your operating system, but the goal for all the operating system is same. (we have to create a manual profile for wireless network)

    5) how to create a manual profile?

    windows xp,
first right click on on wireless lan network, or anything that says wireless on network connections page. click on properties. click on wireless tab, (note if you dont have wireless tab, you will need to enable wireless zero configuration service), once you are on wireless tab make sure, that the first checkbox is checked that says let windows configure my wireless connection. below that there's a white box that says preferred networks, remove all the networks / ssid from that box. after that click on add and thats how you create it manually by inserting all the information in here manually such as ssid, passphrase or passkey, security mode which is now & should be WEP)

same is for windows vista and 7

proceed to control panel and netowrk and sharing center. click on manage wireless networks. remove all the wireless networks from here, then click on add. click on manuall add a network. insert your network name/ssid, passhrase/passkey/password, then select security type as WEP. click next and finish.

bingo you are done, no need to do osri or any other thing.

JUST REMMEMBER WEP IS COMPATIBLE WITH ALL THE WIRELESS EQUIPMENTS AVAILABLE TODAY, WPA AND WPA 2 PERSONAL ARE STILL NOT.

    @streetglow - Thanks for the help! :) It's greatly appreciated! :)

I tried to use WEP and it works just fine. I just don't want to use WEP because it's less secure and there are many free softwares available to crack your WEP password.

What's weird is that my other laptops who are Windows 7 be default didn't encounter this error. Only those who are Windows Vista and upgraded to Windows 7. O__O

For the upgrade from Vista to Win 7 connection problems, usually resetting winsock will fix it.

You can also try a clean install from upgrade CD. Clean Install Windows 7

    To reset Winsock:

    1. Click start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then press Continue.

    2. Type netsh winsock reset at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Note If the command is typed incorrectly, you will receive an error message. Type the command again. When the command is completed successfully, a confirmation appears, followed by a new command prompt. Then, go to step 3.

    3. Type exit, and then press ENTER. You should be prompted to reboot, if not you should reboot and test.
