Wired private network forgets network settings

Each year, I have the need to create a temporary private wired network of four laptops connected via a switch. This network is only used on a handful of weekends and is disassembled on each of these occasions. There is no router and no need for Internet access.

In the past, there was a mixture of Windows XP and Windows 7 laptops and my temporary network would remember all the network settings from one session to the next. I'm now using a mostly different set of laptops, three of which run Win 7 and one runs Win 10. This new kit no longer remembers any network settings (apart from the hard-coded IP addresses).

On each new session, I find that the Network and Sharing Center screen on each laptop has reverted to showing an unidentified public network. I now have to turn on Network Discovery for all four laptops and put in the username and password for accessing the Win 10 laptop, which contains a database back end. I would like to avoid this rather repetitive and tedious procedure.

My attempt to resolve this by creating a new network definition, under a name of my choosing (rather than 'Unidentified'), was thwarted by the insistence that I provide router details, which is impossible when a router is not part of this network.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.
