SMB share always shows login dialog, cannot access it from network

I have a Windows 7 machine with SMB shares configured. Previously these settings have worked, but now for some reason the shares are not accessible from the subnet specified. I have shares that should be accessible in a specified subnet without any password or user information. The ports 137, 138, 139 and 445 are open in the Windows Firewall and the scope is specified there as it should be. I can ping the machine from anywhere.

Shares work in my local subnet the way they should, but when I try to connect from the bigger subnet that my local subnet is part of, it asks for username and password. Even if I provide my correct username and password, I just get "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password."

My advanced sharing settings are as follows:
  • Network discovery: On
  • File and printer sharing: On
  • Public folder sharing: Off
  • Encryption: Enable file sharing for deviced that use 40- or 56-bit encryption (either one doesn't work)
  • Password protected sharing: Off
  • Homegroup connections: Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections
My computer isn't part of any homegroup, but it has a workgroup specified as required for the shares.

Solutions that I have tried without success:

  • Checking that clock are sync on machines (doesn't work from the same machine if I try to connect with an DNS name, not IP address, IP address uses only the local subnet)
  • Changing Local Security Policy settings
    • Network Security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based clients & servers: No minimum
    • Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts: Guest only - local users authenticate as Guest
How I am able to connect (still opens a password prompt):
  • From a mac OS computer, with guest account and no password, but not as Guest
  • From a mac OS computer, with my own account and password
  • From an Ubuntu computer, with guest account and no password
  • From an Ubuntu computer, with my own account and password
What I want:
  • Connect from any computer without a password prompt
So how do I get rid of the authetication dialog that now comes up every time even though the password protected sharing is off?

Access Network share without mapping
I want to know if I can access a network share (for CMD line copy) that requires a username and password without mapping it. The reason is for the purpose of copying backups. If I were to map the drive, any virus/malware could infect the share, defeating the purpose. I know I can copy to...
