Can I make a remote device imitate and send a keystroke?

When I'm away from the keyboard, it would be cool to be able to toggle the "random" function in Videolan by copying the "r" from the keyboard and somehow assigning it to my Logitech harmony remote control device. Any ideas how to copy the "r" command and paste it to the remote control?
