Kindle Fire networking question...

If I can connect to my Windows 7 computer wirelessly over the network and access its shared folders with my Kindle Fire why do I not see the Kindle showing up as a networked device in the Windows 7 Network panel? Everything else that is wirelessly connected is there. Just curious is all.

For Windows to see a device or another computer it has to have a couple of protocols running and a few ports open. I think Kindle is probably some fork of Linux and I doubt that they have any downloadable applications or packages to make it possible to view.

Your router would be able to see it in connected devices, If you download a network scanner you should be able to see it or if you run the command:
Code:
arp -a
you should see it's IP and Mac address

I'm thinking of getting this device. At the moment, all wireless connections are off on my router. While I live in a safe neighborhood, I'd still prefer to keep things as hardened as possible. Essentially, I'm a total boob about wireless. Can you offer pointers or sites that can get me up to...
