network discovery fails, so I have to map shared drives from other pc

I found this
Network Discovery - Turn On or Off in Windows 7 - Windows 7 Help Forums

and this

Network Discovery property will not turn ON - Windows 7 Help Forums

On mine, it is turned on, AFAIK, but it never sees any other PC's in the network label of the file manager.
Ideas?
I can map the drive manually.

Fixed completely by doing a new install of win7.

This also fixed extremely long boot up time. Fixed lots more things I suppose I never knew were broken.

It had been so slow to boot, I was looking at upgrading hardware to go from sata2 to sata3.
