Windows 7 changes from WPA2 to WPA

    Hello everyone.

I recognized that my maxspeed of my D-Link Wlan Adapter drops from 200-400Mbps to 54Mbps after I wake up my notebook or restart it. Finally I figured out, that Windows set the security settings from WPA2 to WPA. Even now, after I set y router from WPA/WPA2 (mixed) to WPA2 (only). How can I force Windows 7 to use only WPA2?

I tried also the DP-link Profile Wlan Tool. But this does actually nothing.

    Thank you.

    Hi Traveler99,

have a look at this thread see Chev65's screenshots
How to set WPA-AES? - Windows 7 Help Forums

W7 is where you have to change the settings AS WELL.

i would also go to device manager and change the power management settings
allow computer to turn me off UNCHECK BOTH

Thank you. Actually I changed the settings won the W7 machine as well. However, I disabled the D-Link Wlan Configuration tool and booted the Nootebook. So far it keeps the settings. All good. Nonetheless I'll check the max speed for a while after wake-up and restart.

It doesn't work. After the notebook wake up, TKIP is in the setting. It is even worse. I had to restart the notebook to get an working internet connection. That sucks.

Some ideas what I can do?

Log into your router's setup screen. Make sure that your wireless network's settings are for WPA2. Save and exit.

This is the router setup, not the Windows setup. The Windows setup has to match what the router settings are. By setting the router to WPA2, everything that connects to your wireless network will have to be WPA2, in order to be allowed to connect.

    Hi

Thanks for your help. I deleted the Wi-Fi network and added it manually. Let's see if that helps. About the router, I can only choose between WPA2-PSK and WPA-PSK/WPA2/PSK. I did set the first option.

Either router option will allow for WPA2, but the first option will force all device to WPA2.

Yes, that's what I thought. So the router should force clients to use WPA2.

Yes. The router is in full control of this process.

The only reason you would want to allow devices to connect with something other than WPA2 is if you have devices which don't have WPA2 capability, but you need for them to be able to connect. But a better, more secure way is to force all devices to use WPA2, then bring all devices up to the WPA2 standard if they aren't already there.

    Update:

I solved it. May be this is helpful for other users......

    1. I deleted the Wlan Profile in 'Network and Sharing Center' under 'Manage wireless networks'.
    2. I added manually a WLAN Network/Profile with all the security settings I prefer.

From then on, it never connected again with TKIP. After wake up or reboot, it connected always with WPA2/AES. But it took up to 30 seconds until the connection was established.

Finally I figured out that the service (services.msc) WLAN autoconfig - WLANSVC wasn't started and Startup Type was set on Manual. I changed it to Automatic and did start the service. For test purpose I disabled my D-Link wlan USB stick in the device manager and enabled it again. Boooom: Blue screen. I restarted the computer but windows wasn't able to start when the stick was plugged in. Then I enabled the embedded Wlan adapter. That was successful but the adapter didn't work at all.

    3. Finally I decided to remove the WLAN driver from the D-Link device and installed it again.

And now, problem solved. It connects to WPA2 AES automatically in only a few seconds. And, WLAN Autoconfig by Windows 7 hast started by itself.

My guess: There was an conflict between Windows Wlan Manager and the D-Link manager/driver. However, it works perfect now. Hope it stays that way...
