Welcome to the forum. What anti virus have you renewed? Have you reset the router as there is often a setting to block wireless seeing pc? You title says home group but your saying work group two different things

Ethernet is a physical connection; wireless is a "radio" connection. As such, an Ethernet connection will always happen, as long as the wire isn't damaged. however, a wireless connection might not happen, because it is a lot more complex than that -- there is a lot more that can fail, causing the connection to fail.

I can imagine the wireless device using an Ethernet connection to "find" the network; then as soon as it finds the network, you can remove the Ethernet cable and keep using the wireless connection.

A similar process is available for some wireless printers. (Canon and HP come to mind.) If your computer can't find the wireless printer, you can connect the printer via a USB cable to the computer; the computer will then find the printer and set up the wireless connection; you can then remove the USB cable and print using the wireless connection.
