Win7 and Vista not playing nice.

Alright I have a brand new Gateway laptop with windows 7. I have a Desktop pc with Windows Vista. I need copy the music folder from the vista machine to the 7 machine.
I have the laptop connected wirelessly to the network. The desktop is a wired connection.
Both computers see each other on the network.
I cannot access any shared files across the network.
I have opened up the network as much as windows will let me. I have disabled all firewalls and AV software. I have tried pinging both machines the vista machine gets no response from the win7 machine. The win 7 machine gets a response from the vista machine.
How do I get both machines to talk to each other, so I can transfer files.
I am going to try doing this from my linux partition as most things usually work from there. I know the great debate between win and linux, don't want an opinion on it. The simple fact is I use both and am happy.

I was just getting ready to run out the door, but, you say "I cannot access any shared files across the network." We need to know, what happens when you try..."Access Denied", prompted for username and password, can see them at all, etc. Post back I'm sure that if I don't get back soon, someone else is going to pitch-in and help

I get an error saying the name of the shared computer is inccorrect or spelt wrong. The funny thing is I see the computers in the networking stuff. One is called The-Adults-PC (Vista), The others is Chrissy-Lappy. When I click on one to open it to view the files I get an error saying the name is spelt wrong and windows cannot access it. SO windows is the one spelling the names, how is it that they are spelt incorrectly. I have diabled password protection for the time being.

First of all, maybe you could take a look at this. Download details: Windows 7 & HomeGroup: Downlevel Sharing Not exactly the sharing bible, but it contains some very helpful information and quite possibly the solution to your issue, especially page 5 and 6 it also contains some troubleshooting help near the end of the document. In the mean time on "The-Adults-PC" could you please type \\Chrissy-Lappy in the run dialog box and tell me what happens. Then attempt the reverse on the "Chrissy-Lappy machine type \\The-Adults-PC

I need to clear things up. I want to be able to access all network shares. I dont use the "public folders" because I don't want to transfer or copy data there. I have the data where I want it. So I share a folder in vista. I want to access that folder in Win7. The only thing Win7 will let me have access to is the computer where the shared file is. I click that computer, and only shared folders are displayed. I try to access a folder that is not part of the "public folders" and that is when the error occurs. Saying that the file name or share is spelled incorrectly. I will double check but I think this is the error code I am getting Error code 0x800704b3. I will double check when I get home, and repost if it is different. Why can't we have XP back. It worked just fine.

    Hi and welcome\

I may have a resource to check look here You cannot access network resources and domain name resolution is not successful when you establish a VPN connection to the corporate network from a Windows Vista-based computer

    hope this helps

I know you said that you have disabled all antivirus and firewalls but sometime simply disabling them is not enough. We beat a similar problem to death here a few days ago and in turned out to be an AntiVirus / Internet Security Suite that needed to be uninstalled. So let me just ask, do you have any third party applications like Zone Alarm, or AVG Internet Protection etc installed. I know that some people have had some success exposing this issue by booting into safemode with networking to determine if the problem still exists. Just something else to look at and try.

McAfee's has so many offerings, I don't know but it won't hurt. Avast, I'm not sure...You might consider Microsoft Security Essentials...it's free, seems to working for most people...I know I use it...and best of all it's free
