Internet access slows to a crawl after 3 days

This is driving me crazy! Both my Firefox and my Chrome browser slow down significantly after about 3 days of computer usage. With Firefox the slowdown is much more noticeable with web pages taking forever to load. Chrome is not as bad but definitely slower at web page loading. If I reboot the computer internet access is lightning quick but once again slows to a crawl after 3 days. I have a wired connection to my network so this is not a WIFI issue These are the steps I have tried:

    - Deleting temporary internet files, clearing history
    - Releasing and renewing my ip address, flushing my DNS cache
    - Rebooting the router
    - disabling and then re enabling my network card
    - Resetting Firefox, disabling all extensions, staring Firefox in safe mode etc
    - disabling my anti virus software
    - disconnecting from the network and then reconnecting

    NOTHING seems to work.

Speedtest on Firefox shows Ping of 12ms, 220 down and 20 up right after a reboot. After a couple days it shows Ping of 250ms, 200 down, 15 up. The increase in Ping time is huge. After about the third day Firefox cant even run the Speedtest. I get a "Latency Error". Chrome is usable but still much slower than after a reboot.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hi GregO1949,
    Welcome to SevenForums!
My first though is Memory Leaks

    Couple questions.
    What ISP are you using?
    What Router?
Have you installed all updates relating to Chrome, Firefox, Windows?
What happens to your RAM usage in Task Manager over time?

In addition to the ISP, what anti-virus are you using? If it's Avast or something that interacts with the network, then completely uninstall that anti-virus and reboot. If it works try Bitdefender Free. If not, it may be your ISP, router or something else going on. You can try to reset the network stack as well. PC Support | Velocity Micro

Do you stay abreast of router firmware updates from the manufacture?

Make sure UPnP and remote access is off in the router.

OP stated a reboot of computer resolves issue temporarily. Based upon this, I don't believe router is issue. I run Avast free and don't have issue with browser slowdowns Firefox Quantum or Chrome, with computer running for weeks without reboot.
If OP checks RAM usage over time (2-3 day period as OP stated) increases, latency increases, then memory leak is most likely culprit.
There are a few tweaks for Firefox that will force it to release ram.

My isp is Spectrum. Router is an Asus RT-AC66U, all router firmware updates current, all Windows, Firefox and Chrome updates current. Not an issue with router as other computers on my network don't have this issue. Ram usage consistant at about 5Gb (out of 20Gb available). Since the slowdown also occurs with Chrome I don't think its a browser issue........ Thanks

Because rebooting solves the problem, it leads me to believe that a program is holding onto some ram. The easy way to solve this problem is to reboot more often.

One can also look using msconfig and see what is booting with Windows 7 including "non" Microsoft services.

Task Manager shows 4.7Gb of ram is being used. This usage is constant even after 3 days. I have 20Gb of ram installed in my computer. Would that indicate that it's probably not a memory problem?

    Hi GregO1949,

I am quite a heavy Internet user and did use Firefox, I.E. and Chrome. Now I just use the last two and don't have a problem. I only reboot about once or twice a month, if that. I do however, use CCleaner & Glarys Utilities to clean things up every other day. It does make a marked difference and keeps things nice and clean and running smoothly.

I know this doesn't help your problem but I thought I would mention it as an alternative!

    I hope this helps!
