Setting up Network with share options

My Windows 7 system had a primary hard disk failure; the seconddisk was okay. A new disk was installed and Windows 7 professional installed onit.

So I have
Disk 1 with Partition C containing Windows and programs andPartition P containing Data.
Disk 2 with Partition D containing programs andPartition N containing Data.
There is an external disk with 3 partitions, R, S and T allcontaining data.

I have a laptop also running Windows 7 Professional and this hasa single disk with 2 partitions; C containing Windows and programs and Zcontaining data.

I am using a TP-Link wireless Router.

So, I am trying to rebuild the network. I can connect to theInternet from either computer.

I can access the folders on the 3 partitions R, S and T as Ihave been into "My computer" and set up the share option. But Icannot set up share for partitions P and N. Well, I can set up the share option(with the option that password is not required) but when I try to access thefiles on these two partitions I get the message that I do not have permission.

Strangely I can "map network drive" and choose the folder "users" on both computer and laptop and I can access these two folders from either computer or laptop.

I even tried to set up another partition (U) on the external HDD and create a folder with one file and tried to set up share on this folder but it would not allow me to access it.

So, I am running out of ideas and would appreciate any suggestions or help please?

Welcome to the forum. You set permissions on the share but then you need to set NTFS permissions on the folder this is why you get no permissions to access files as NTFS is blocking it add the user or everyone to rights

Thanks for your help; it is much appreciated.

Okay, I've checked out ---Properties--Security and, for each HDD I get a list of users. Each one has the various attributes (Full Control, Modify, Read and Execute etc.) ticked.

There is however, one difference that I am unable to explain.

On Drive P which I am unable to access from my laptop there is a list of Users.....

Authenticated Users
System
Administrators
Users

However, on Drive R which I can access from my laptop the list of users is:

Everyone
System
Administrators
Users

So, it appears that I need to change "Authenticated Users" to "Everyone". But I don't know how to do this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Security is divided into groups to make it simpler everyone includes as the name says everyone, users are anyone with an account. You can simply add the group everyone the only downside is it's open to hackers. The simple way is to setup an account on the PC with same name password as the PC your using to connect from you then have rights as a user

Thanks Samuria. Solved. Though I'd like to understand better why I couldn't set up "Authenticated Users" in the same way as I set up "Everyone". My laptop has a logon username and password. My main computer doesn't yet (as I'm still rebuilding it). And I haven't yet re-installed the antivirus software and firewall. Security should not be an issue as the Router has a username and password and, in any case, my nearest neighbour is some 2km away and I have no telephone line!
