Advice on VPN selection?

Advice on VPN selection?

I'm interested in getting a VPN & have done some research.

Can anyone tell me the best source(s)links to go to for VPN comparisons.

Below are some of the VPN concerns I picked up on my first search.
I'm not a techie and picked these points as an experienced 30+ yr busn. user.

What's valid, What's not:
-WebRTC & DNS leakage
-Win10 my bypasses many vpn clients
-Many vpn's aren't truthful about privacy.
-A Kill switch is vert important.
-Geo location of VPN home Office is important because of USA laws.
-Browser vs None browser vs Router VPN?
-Provides ad-blocking?
-Geo Diversity of their servers?
-Rented servers, outright owned servers virtual server locations?
-Ease of setup
-OpenVPN or IKEv2 protocol?
-Phony VPNs
Some of the recommended "best" VPN's I came across.
-Private Internet Access
-Nordvpn
-Expressvpn
Am I on the rite track? Please advise.

Currently I have been using Windscribe FREE for about a week to understand the operational considerations, etc.
I've also searched & went thru this forum search for "VPN" and read most comments.

Why do you want a VPN to slow your connection unless you work for CIA or want to view films from another country there is not a lot of point

samuria,

I don't recall asking for speed slowdown info. If you noticed I'm using Winscribe FREE and speed has actually stayed the same or improved a scooch.

Good instincts on the CIA, howerver I don't, I work for Romulan, Praetor Tal'aura - 2379-2384 on Rator III.

I wrote about this on my own forum because there is a big industry out there on VPNs. Many people have no clue about how they work and what you should look for. I use VPN.ac myself. They are based in Romania which doesn't have a data retention law, offer great encryption capabilities, and use their own DNS servers. I would read through all of their FAQs. www.vpn.ac

Another good one, though I've never used it is ProtonVPN. They are based in Switzerland and they too don't have Internet data retention laws.

Read this if you want: Which VPN Services Keep You Anonymous in 2017? - TorrentFreak

Here's a guide to router setup: VPN Router Setup - Simple Guide | Restore Privacy

Be advised that PayPal and other financial services may not like your VPN and ban your account. It's best to run a VPN client on the computer rather than a whole swath router approach unless you have two routers for that purpose like using Kodi.

Here's a direct copy and paste form my site:

With VPN's being all the rage now a days, especially with something like Kodi, it's easy to understand why people want to protect their privacy. When looking for a VPN you should consider the following four criteria. E-mail the VPN you have an interest in and ask them the following questions:

1) Do you allow port forwarding?

If they allow port forwarding then scrap that VPN. With port forwarding on in a VPN your true IP can be exposed.

2) What country are you based in?

If the VPN you are interested in is not in a country that is Internet privacy friendly then scrap that VPN. Three countries that I know are Internet privacy friendly are Romania, Iceland and Switzerland. There are others, but I'm not sure what they are.

3) Do you use DNS leak protection?

If the VPN you are interested in doesn't offer DNS leak protection then scrap that VPN. You can test DNS leaks at this website: DNS leak test

You should see a result that doesn't match the DNS you use all the time like your ISP's DNS or third party DNS you may use like Google or OpenDNS.

4) Do you keep any logs?

All VPNs keep a log in some form or another. Some VPNs state they don't keep logs at all, but rather just keep a time stamp of access only. Some VPNs just log your bandwidth usage. If the VPN that you're interested in keeps logs beyond those two points then I would not consider that VPN.

Those are the four main criteria in choosing a good VPN. Now you need to concern yourself with WebRTC. It's hard to turn off in a smart device, but fairly easy to do in a computer. Read here: WebRTC Leak Test - IP Address Discovery - Media Device ID Fingerprint - BrowserLeaks.comhis

This website was created by VPN.ac to check browser privacy. IP X - IP info and leak test suite

Private Internet Access is a good one. I am using it from time to time. Also, it has a very nice Android client.

Well, someone hacked into my bank account and stole money, because I was using a public wifi. VPN can protect from such things but of course you can use it to access more content. I would suggest using paid VPNs, like NordVPN, ExpressVPN or PIA. They are huge on the market and definitely reliable with speed, security and no logs policies.

Advice on VPN selection?

Guys,

This forum has always responded to my questions with solutions that worked.
All your responses with the high quality info you included earned my Superman Award with a Gold Star for your hard work.

Most of my day was spent going over what you sent me. All your info is in Evernote for continuing reference.

Please allow me a few more questions:

I have 2 computers with W7 Pro 32 bit set up identicaly. Both have the latest version of Firefox & Tor and when I subscribe to a VPN, can I install it on both PC'c to use with both browsers? And will email via Thunderbird sent from either PC be protected?

Regards & Thanks,

klxdrt

A VPN is just a client software that can be run on more than one computer. Typically, a VPN provider may allow as many as four simultaneous connections.

If you are running the VPN your email will go through the VPN. In fact, any traffic that goes through the NIC while the computer is running the VPN client will go through the VPN.

I don't know why PIA is so popular with people. They allow port forwarding which is a bad thing and last time I had it their ruby.exe thrashed on my SSD. Not cool. I already mentioned two that you should look into. Look at their site's and read their FAQs.
