Home Network: Which Ports must be open when no need to share files

I am still trying to tighten my firewalls etc, and when googling (or DDG'ing in my case) I noticed that any question related to network security automatically is answered with the assumption in mind that the person wants to maintain a sharing capability with the other computers in the house, like printers, files, whatever. With the result that answers are tailored toward that, skipping over the fact that some people do NOT want to share their darn files.

This is my case. I have already chosen Public over Home network, and I'm not part of this grid. I do of course share the internet connection.

So my question is, netbios should be able to me disabled and I should still be able to get online. But that is not the case somehow. Any idea why that would be?

I searched in vain so far for a straightforward list that indicates all the necessary ports that NEED to be open for a wireless internet connection WITHOUT interconnectedness to the other computers on the same network.

To be honest, Samba, NETBIOS and Windows file sharing is rife with hacker potential. I don't use it and I disable NETBIOS in the network adapters. What I do if I have to share a file between computers is my own home FTP server running on a Dell netbook that is on 24/7. It's been on constantly for about five years now. I did have to replace the flash drive since the page file was on. I have since upgraded the RAM and disabled the page file to minimize writes. Thank God I cloned the netbook prior to this failure using AOMEI Backupper with two thumb drives. One for the clone, and the other for AOMEI.

The FTP server used to be open on the Internet through port forwarding in my router, and to minimize any hacking the port was well above 30,000, and I ran Peerblock that I made custom block lists for that blocked IPs from several hundred hosting/cloud providers like Amazon, Azure, Microsoft, Digital Ocean, you name it. Plus I block several countries up to and including China, Russia, Iran, etc. It was nice because I can use my smartphone while out and about and use the App AndFTP to upload things to my house. Now it's chiefly used withen my own house to exchange files between computers and my smartphone. The FTP storage is on a 14 GB SD card. Plenty for me. The FTP software I use is from Filezilla. The Filezilla FTP server.

Another option is to install the TeamViewer service on the computers and you can remote into the computers. There's even a TeamViewer App that I use on my smartphone. I can be anywhere in the world with an Internet connection and remote into my computer. If you go this route make sure you 2FA (two factor authentication) the TeamViewer account. I use the 2FA Authy App the most. If you use Authy you can use the App and the desktop program. After you add these go into the Authy options and disable adding other accounts as a security precaution. Make sure you use their backup cloud. I don't like Clouds, but it's better than losing all of your accounts that have 2FA turned on. I also backup the one time codes to Keepass. The database of Keepass gets copied and encrypted as a SFX archive and copied to several locations up to and including DVD/RW and Amazon S3. I also use the program ICE ECC to create an ECC file of the database should the archive become corrupt.

    Anyway, food for thought.
