Work network mostly can't connect

2 desktop computers, which are in my sig. HP and Gateway
I was advised to use Work Network to avoid using passwords, even though I'm at home.
Name of Network is RSNETWORK. Network is ethernet, internet access is fine

I want these shared:
-both username (Prize-02 and PC-03) folders, or if not, the AppData folders
-D, the Data partition (drive) on each called D-Gate and D-HP
-Printer on the HP

How I use them: I use one comp to back up data more often than my image on exterior drive, and back up any changes in program profiles, Firefox, Thunderbird profiles, etc. I use 1 to work from home online. I set up the Gateway, formerly a Vista, just this month, and it's my first time trying to network Win7.

Neither machine can make a network map.

Issues:
-On the Gateway, I never named the network "Network," but there's no place to change it
-I marked all my folders "shared", but D and USERNAME folders revert back to "Unshared."
-Gateway can't even access its own folder in Win Explorer\Network
-HP can access only the Users folder on the Gateway, although I've already unshared that folder.

I've gone over all the settings for days, passwords are turned off.

The problem is the folders your trying to share any user folder's have very tight permission on them even on the of as administrator you can't access users folders. If you want to share those folders you will have to change NTFS permission on the folders. security is set on these folders to protect windows from malware etc so there is a risk changing things

Both computers are mine, I live alone, and I have changed the permissions I've found. That wouldn't explain why I can't share documents, graphics and photos on the D drive, or why the Gateway can't network to ANYTHING on the HP.

I think the last time I had malware was about 15 years ago, and I'm not too concerned about it, as I have 3 backup techniques, including an exterior image and some nightly backups. But one of my methods is backing up data and profiles from the HP to the Gateway. I've been doing it that way with XP machines for years, but it was easier in Win XP.

How would you suggest I keep the profiles updated in AppData without getting slapped on the hand by the OS? I've counted 19 programs that drop their profiles there. And can you show me where there are some permissions that I might have missed? It's my first time trying to network Win7.

BTW--just noticed the router is listed as "wireless'," when actually it's both, and I use only the ethernet.

I don't use special software, just back up the data by copying from one machine to the other. I never thought of using software. I need something really simple and intuitive.

I use Macrium only to back up C onto an external HD, but not very often. Don't know if it works on networks.

One question I have is why the HP can access some of the folders in the Gateway, but the Gateway can't access anything, not even itself.
