I suddenly do not have internet access and I do not understand why?

I have changed nothing on or in my computer that would cause this.

I have no firewall or anti-virus that could be blocking access. It shows "no internet access" with a red X between my network and the internet. It shows the ipv4 as "no internet connectivity" but it has obtained an ip address and everything in the "details" section looks fine as far as I can tell. I made sure it was set to obtain an ip and dns automatically. I tried cmd functions like "netsh int ip reset" and the "ipconfig /dnsreset /dnsregister /release /renew.

I tried shutting the modem off and unplugging the cables and rebooting the computer. I do not have a router. The modem is plugged directly into the computer by ethernet cable. All the lights come on the modem. I called the isp and they said everything looks fine from their end.

The only thing I can think of is suddenly a certain service required for internet access is disabled and I have no clue as to which it is. Otherwise, I am at a complete loss as to why I suddenly cannot connect to the internet. It was working fine yesterday morning.

If the modem has a recessed hole that you can press do that for a modem reset.

(sorry for the late reply)

I was able to have the connection working again after also using "netsh winsock reset". I had forgotten about that command.

However I had the problem arise again this morning. I fixed it by using the "ipconfig /release" + "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" + "netsh winsock reset" then unplugging the modem and rebooting the computer.

Is there something specific that causes this to happen? I suppose next time I will follow the steps in the second post and see if anyone will know?

(and can the resetlog be actually read anywhere? It is never in the specified c: location)

I'm assuming that your modem is having a hard time with a automatic release and renew of the DHCP given IP address. This is a modem and not a router? If this modem was given to you by your ISP you may want to seek a replacement. I'm not too sure if this is your issue though, but it may help.

Jjust for teh heck of it, check your IP here: Shodan Find your IP here: What Is My IP Address - See Your Public Address - IPv4 & IPv6

If Shodan says you have open ports then that could be an issue. I know many modems or routers can be infected by a hacker and I've seen my fair share of connections to my website from infected routers/modems.

If you have a modem not a router you PC is live on the net open to any hacker behind a router the router is live not the pc. If it's a router your IP will be in the range 192.168
