Windows 7: DNS look-ups fail intermittently

DNS look-ups fail intermittently

My main workstation (wired) sometimes fails to resolve DNS for several minutes at a time. When this happens, I cannot access anything that needs name resolution. I can access everything by IP address. Pings also fail unless I use IP addresses.

I get the same results with multiple browsers. All other PC's on the network work just fine when this happens. Flushing DNS does not help. My gateway device provides DHCP and DNS so the network settings on all of my PC's are set to obtain IP and DNS automatically. In the gateway settings, I also have each PC's IP address tied to it's MAC so each PC always gets the same IP. Windows Troubleshooter does not find any issues.

One caveat (when this issue occurs) is that I can use a proxy with an Internet browser and DNS works because it is being tunneled.

Rebooting the computer or disabling and re-enabling the network adapter resolves the issue until it happens again. This happens about once a day, on average.

Anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot this?

Set DNS to 9.9.9.9 & 1.1.1.1 these are fast DNS gateways are very slow and can't handle lots of requests

Thanks but your suggestion is more of a workaround and does not address the actual problem

My gateway device handles DNS just fine. It's not a consumer grade unit supplied by a service provider and it actually uses 9.9.9.9 and 1.1.1.1.

Again, only this particular PC is affected and no others.

I use 1.1.1.1 from Cloudflare which is the acknowledged fastest current DNS server system, and as backup I use 8.8.8.8 which is Google's that although slightly slower that the Cloudflare uses all the same technologies so is also as secure

9.9.9.9 is an alternative service backed by IBM that uses IBM data to check for potential "Bad" servers - this can be used by those that have any sort of Issue with google although the checking can slow things down.

If you use a DNS server on your network then set two of these DNS servers as Primary and secondary servers in your server, or otherwise set them as Primary and secondary in the router or each device

If you have other services available from your ISP or other provider you can check the comparatives using the free tool from Network guru Steve Gibson GRC's | DNS Nameserver Performance Benchmark

Run the tool from the bad device - to compare with a fast unit and it may give a clue as to the issue
