Just look at all the posts on network adapter woes here.

Wireless and ethernet, driver issues, dropout issues, reliability and speed issues, there are a whole plethora of problems spread wide and far across the forum.

Point me to an XP forum which lists anything like as many issues

Past or Present? Windows XP has had about 10 years to get mature drivers. However it is also still using older technology. Compared to what is being used in more modern networks.

I'm talking about the present of course, but am referring to it specifically in the light of what Microsoft admit in retrospect was a drivers debacle when Vista was launched - with the emphasis being squarely upon this situation they themselves judged poor being repeated with Windows7 RTM products...

Awesome reply/post. Shows the others that 'think' they know what they are talking about are wrong. Not that I am always right, but I do my best to state something along the lines that my reply may not be 100% accurate.

Windows, no matter what version, will never have my faith in operation when it comes to networking and any 'so-called' automatically setting garbage that Windows is supposed to do is hogwash. Why? Because in order for your computer to work properly, you need to set things manually (in special cases). MS has a lot of work to do in order to get things right when it comes to networking. It would be much better if they would just FOLLOW standards instead of trying to make standards that just DON'T work... As far as MTU settings in a router, well, maybe that MIGHT help, but what if you don't have a router? Then, yes, you need to set it within your operating system.

Scenario... I use an LG Revolution with Tethering (Yes, before you say anything, I DO pay for the hotspot service, so it is 100% legit!!!). I have had LOTS of problems connecting to websites. With Ubuntu Linux, and it's EASY network setting ability, I was able to determine setting MTU=1300 as a prefect setting. All websites now loaded at full speed without any hanging around for days waiting for a web page to show up that never would. Not until I was able to set MTU=1300.

@Qdos - I Agree.

@TorrentG - Yeah, right. See my Scenario

Don't get me wrong, people, Between the mess with Windows Millenium and Windows Vista, I feel that Windows XP and Win7 are, by far, the best OS Versions MS has released. (I kind of like the way that Windows 7 copied the 'update' process of Ubuntu Linux, supplying hardware drivers via Update, rather than having to search for them, especially some hard-to-find drivers). The problem with Windows these days, is that it's base is outdated. It's time for MS to rebuild a NEW OS from the ground up. I'm not a hater of MS overall, just their practices and failure to come out with a truly improved OS. Adding fancy graphics and such is not worth the efforts (looked what happened with Vista, even the CEO didn't want Vista put on his workstation, at least that's what the assumed leaked email that went around stated). The registry needs to go away and many other changes. I believe they have the ability to do so, but I think they are afraid of losing users through a major change. That's understandable since it would be likely that previous software would no longer work, but Windows has been basically the same since Windows 95.

I felt the need to post this because I don't like ignorance and wanted to reinforce my gratitude to those who don't stop at "you can't do it", when there are always ways to do it and it was accomplished. In fact, I used the "you CAN do it" reply and was able to get my Windows 7 OS internet functionality back to 100%.

Sorry, if I offended anyone, just like to speak my mind and many thanks to those who give correct answers! :-)

EDIT: I realize this is an OLD post, but still relevant and the first post that came up in a Google search for my needs.

Change default location for "Change Icon..." button?
In Windows 7, all the good icons are in %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll, but we're still taken to the old SHELL32.dll when it comes time to change an icon. Is there a registry key or something that we can change to remedy this?
