No internet connectivity after new Win 7 installation

I just installed a 250GB SSD into an old Asus 1000HE netbook and did a fresh installation of Windows 7 32bit. The installation went fine but internet connectivity is a real problem. I can connect to my wireless network and it says it is connected to the internet. However, I can only connect to very few websites. Google works but not much else. There are no exclamations in device manager. The wireless adapter is an Atheros AR928x. I have tried the default driver that loaded with Windows and I have also updated the driver and both appear to work as far as Windows is concerned. If I try to install Brave or Firefox from a USB drive the installations fail because they can't connect. I can't connect to Windows update (error 80072EFE).

I also tried connecting it via ethernet cable and it's the same.

When I run the network troubleshooter, sometimes it will say: "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding"

I have tried a few fixes for this including changing the DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 and disabling ipv6.

I don't have any antivirus installed but I did try disabling Windows Firewall and Windows Defender

I can ping various websites in Command prompt without any problem.

I put in the old hard drive to see if any of the hardware had failed and everything still works, it's just extremely slow.

I connected to my phone's wireless hotspot and the problem is the same so it isn't the router.

I also tried re-installing Windows 7 again from scratch and I get the same problem.

I am completely stumped. Never seen anything like this before.

I would really appreciate some help with this.

    Thanks

Thanks for the replies. It turns out that I needed KB3102810 in order to get windows update to connect. Once it connected, I was able to get 1GB worth of updates. After that the problem disappeared completely. That was painful. Thanks again.
