Yay more connection problems

I can't work this one out. I randomly lose connection, the little wifi icon is still there with 2 out of the 5 bars, but i have no connection and the little widget thing says i dont. I had a tinker with the device manager and found that the problem was the (wpn111) driver was already loaded and could not be loaded again since it was already in the system. Apparently, this means nothing to me, im just confused as to why it decides to drop connection. So at the moment the only was to get round this is to turn off the PC and start again.

Anyone help?

I have the same thing, happens intermittently but several times per day. Can't find root cause but I have a Linksys Wirless G PCI network adapter. Driver 2.0.3.0 from 12/11/2006. Always requires a full reboot to correct - no other wireless devices on the network are experiencing any problems.

ok bambi, need a lil more info from you.

first, did you use the cd to install the drivers or let 7 find and install? any problems? if so, how/what? How are you finding your connection, thru netgear wizard or thru windows connection? Do you have security setup on the router for wifi, wpa?

Am concerned also with the "2 of 5 bars" connectivity... are you in the basement or other side of house? Do you know what channel the router is on, and what channel the wifi adapter is on? Try changing channels for both, matching. Are there such things like cordless phones, microwaves, ect around the AP/router? Do you have network discovery (in windows) turned on? What type of router are you using as well?

Lastly, if you still have problems... (not knowing the above answers to ?'s) I would uninstall that driver/software for that adapter completely, reboot, plug in adapter, load adapter cd (but dont run the setup). From device manager, install the adapters .inf/driver file from inside the cd (vista driver). Do not install the netgear software itself. After that, reboot.... if you have wep/wpa setup on router, do the same for the adapter. Make sure to check the channels... I usually run channel 1 or 11. Post back with more info and possible results, and we can go from there.

Well, i let 7 find the drivers, but i had the cd in the drive which came with the netgear adapter. So i think it was a cd. That went smoothly and i was connected as soon as the drivers and a restart was done.
Its a wifi'ed router with mac access list so only certain Mac address's can get on with wep. I have set this adapter to always be 192.168.1.2 and thats fine.

Well its not the otherside of the house, but more like downstairs. about like 7 metres diagonally through the floor i think. But i mean on xp i had about the same always around 40-50% strength and i was fine. EERRMMM i think the channel is 6-G. thats what is was on with XP, but i can't find a way of using the netgear software with 7, only the autoconfig way, so i cant check that for sure.

Theres a cordless phone next to the router (but as i said on xp was fine) and network discovery is default, (didnt know it existed). Router is netgear one "NETGEAR's WPN824 RangeMax™ Wireless Router".
RangeMax™ Wireless Routers WPN824

I will try the uninstall netgear thing in a second and post back on how things go

Thanks

OK. I guess by setting the netgear adapter to static xx.xx.1.2 i assume you have your dns setup as xx.xx.1.1?

I had this similar problem, but wired. Instead of using the 7 drivers, i had to install the driver for my adapter from website (basically a reinstall). This was due to 7 no routing the network/homegroup, and the showing of a red X.... different problem, but related IMO. After you have tried doing all of the above "fixes"... try disabling the IPv6 for that adapter as i dont think netgear supports any IPv6, altho i could be mistaken, also could be a new firmware for your router.... To change settings for channel, go into the adapter properties. "Configure".

Since you said this worked fine with xp, i am banking on an reinstall of the driver itself only, by navigating on the cd without running setup, SHOULD fix this problem.

Yes the DNS is 1.1

Ill try the reinstall now, i've never had any problem in XP so i assumed it was a driver issue. hang ten lemme reinstall.

-baMBi-

EDIT

Ok i have reinstalled Netgear, but i had to install the software also, this is because i first tried just the drivers via just the cd and windows 7. But i went to connect to the network and it never asked for the wep key, just said fail. I then install the software again and it asked for the wep key and here i an.
Ill post back if it happens again :0 but i find its either if i have utorrent up or just because it hates me.

EDIT

Ok its got worse, but its seems to be a different problem. Since the reinstall at around about 5 (now 10 pm) ive had around about 5 random drops from my connection. But the problem is different as this time 7 recognises its been dropped and i have to manually click the network icon and click connect to my network. Sometimes this fails, but after a couple of re-tries it works. Any ideas now?

Hmm. You shouldnt HAVE to install the actual netgear software for the adapter. Windows should allow you to connect to a network thru its config. It also has a spot to enter encryption. Another thought/suggestion would be to change from wep to wpa-psk.

If you try installing the driver thru device manager, reboot. Then upon rebooting, find the MS wireless icon in systray, left click it, then find your connection/router and right click properties, enter the key there.

Other option while you already have that netgear connection software installed is to pull THAT up and find where you can switch to windows wireless config... should be an option to do so. You can try that first, then if doesnt work, uninstall everything netgear and reboot, then install driver thru device manager.

Other options would include updating the firmware for that router also, altho being a new'ish router, not sure how many firmware updates it may have.

Lastly, have you tried the troubleshooter? if so, when chosen, does it atleast correct the issue until next reboot, or do you still have same problem over and over?

hope something works for you here
Good luck.

Bambi. Did you reset your router. Turn it off and turn it back on? Call the cable company sounds like might be a problem on their end. Anyway good luck to ya.

Tried it all Digger, nothing worked. Updated the FW on the router, uninstalled the software and reinstalled drivers etc, nothing. As for the router, i know it works fine since it worked flawlessly when in XP, and when i boot up XP now i never drop.

-baMBi-

EDIT

I think i have solved it, haven't had a drop all afternoon. All I did in case anyone has the same problem was use the client software and disable the WZC. Just go into services and stop the WLAN auto config. Use the Netgear software and bam, no drops nothing
Thanks for ur help Digger
