I am glad you have it working, but what I don't understand is why you don't just add the printer to the network and avoid all these problems. Avoid all the work and all the time spent making it work. USB to Ethernet printing is so cheap now-a-days it just does not make sense to spend all this time. Plus I keep reading over and over that someone gets this all working only to have it stop after a few months with a MS update or something happens to a computer and it has to be fix or the OS re-loaded and the problems start all over. Here is a link to how cheap these devices are: Amazon.com: NEEWER® USB 2.0 LRP Print Server Share a Networking USB Printer: Electronics you may find others or shop other places but these are super easy.

Note: I would not use the software and just map via IP address as one of the commenters wrote on this device I posted the link to.

Anyway just my 2 cents, and again I am very happy you have it working. -WS

    Great Solution..

Although this is an old post now. This has solved an ongoing printing problem. I have older HP printers set up on my Win XP desktop and this solution enables me to print from either of our two laptops, one running Windows 7 home and one running Windows 8 pro....Great solution jimbo....

    Hi Mods
Maybe you can make this a sticky -- often comes up and I posted a solution yesterday which works.
    ..............extract from previous post .....
    Hi there
I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

    1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

    2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

    3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

    4) Create NEW port==>Local port

    5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

    6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

    Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.

If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

    Cheers
    jimbo

Thanks Jimbo - This works great. It helps to run the network printer search and make sure that (1) you can see the printer on the network PC and get the correct path to use when setting up the "Local Printer" fix. Good job.

    OK guys

I know that this thread is getting old, but people keep having problems (like me)
here is my scenario and how I got it to work.

XP mach (no printer) and Win7 mach. With HP M1319f MFP.

Jimbo’s solution worked for some but I could never get it to work. I was getting all kinds of funky error messages.

I read in the multitude posts , I have read about dragging the printer from Network window XP mach (no printer) to the Printer window on XP mach (no printer). Can’t find where it was posted , I take no credit, I just remember reading it. So this what I did.

    1. I deleted all printers from my XP mach (no printer)

    2. Make sure both computers are connected to same Workgroup.

I could see my XP on my Win7 Machine and access files, and I could see my Win 7 on my XP, but I could not access anything because of it was wanting a username and password. Everthing I tried still won’t let me in.

    3. On your Win7 computer go to “Network Discovery” by typing it at Help and Support. Then go to “Enable or Disable network Discovery” click to open “Advance sharing settings” when you get there click on both drop arrows to expand.

Scroll down until you get to “ Password protected sharing” and turn it off.
Then continue to scroll until you get to “Public” Scroll down until you get to
“ Password protected sharing” and turn it off.

Save changes and exit. I got this idea from post # 140

Of course you would have your printer set up on your Win7 mach. Before you go on.
That’s all you need to do on the Win7 mach.

    4. Now you go to you XP machine open your “Printer and Faxes window” should not be any printers listed. Then go to “Network Places” > view work group computers.

You should see all the computers connected to your network. Double click the computer with the printer you are wanting to print too. Select the printer and drag it to the “Printer and Faxes window. This all done on your XP Mach.

Test and see that it works, It did for me.

    Hope it works for you,
    Al
