XP to 7 Printer sharing

I have tried redoing it using the existing port, and it just sits there saying its loading the driver for over an hour, So I stopped, rebooted, and did it again and it still locks up saying its loading the driver but never did load,

This is driving me nuts, Im still having to use the old laptop to print my business papers.

I can see the printer on the network and it says its installed just fine, I checked all the computer names and printer share names and its all good, even the remote access tech at lexmark went in and check, said every thing is good to go.they couldn't figure it out either. Just keeps telling me, Cannot Communicate with the Printer.

I am trying to connect 4100N Printer which is shared in windows XP Pro OS, It shows the printer but while i am trying to connect it searches for driver but couldn't find the driver for windows 7 even I did installed driver from HP website for windows 7 but still it asks for INF file.

If someone helps on that will be really appreciated.

I went through all of these solutions but none worked. I still had access Denied problems on my XP laptop when trying to print on my new W7 PC with printer. Problem turned out that the W7 installation created an new workgroup called WORKGROUP. I changed the workgroup name to the name that my home network already had and the Access Denied problem went away. I next had to delete all old printers on the laptop and just access the printers, which reloaded the drivers.

I have Canon iP4200 on a XP machine shared on a home network. Just purchased a new Win 7 laptop, needed to access printer on the home network like we did with the previous vista laptop.

Jimbo's fix got me to where the print job would show up on the XP machine but would show an error in the queue. Tried everything. Found another thead where the guy just changed the shared as name and it all worked. So in the properties, under the sharing tab, with the "Share this printer" button on, the next entry is "Share name:". I just changed that to something different than the default which is the actual printer name from the XP machine. He says it forces the Vista (in my case Win7) machine to load the drivers itself instead of trying to pull them from the XP machine.

Not sure of the details, after changing the shared as name, did a standard network printer install and all seems well... for now!

I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.


If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

I have tried those instructions but I still can't get 32 bit XP SP3 workstation to print to a Dell AIO 922 printer on a Windows 7 64 bit.

My office has a Dell AIO 922 Printer USB attached to a new Dell workstation which has Windows 7 64 bit, this replaced and old windows 2000 workstation. The Windows 7 Machine can print to the 922 printer just fine, The printer is shared on the network and the other workstations which have XP 32bit can't print to the Dell AIO 922 printer. They can see the printer on the network.
I tried installing as a local printer on the XP workstation and setting the local port to be the network path to the printer, still will not print. I get no errors when I add the printer to the XP computer, it just will not print. I get a communication error. I have the same user ID and password on both workstations. File sharing is working between the Windows 7 and the XP workstations.

Can anyone provide assistance with this issue.

I just registered to say thank you. I spent literally hours downloading drivers, messing with settings, reading various forums. I was ready to just give up and just plug into the printer every time I needed to print. Then I come across this. 4 steps and I'm printing. Why couldn't this have been the first forum I read? Thanks again.
