XP to 7 Printer sharing

Shockingly, the problem is now solved. For those who may be attempting Jimbo's method -- it DOES work. My problem previously is that I needed to delete the printer from my XP (non-wired) PC before following the local printer instructions. The XP driver was still on the XP machine.

The instructions worked great and both printers are visible on the windows 7 computer and the laserjet printers fine but the deskjet will not print now. when you hit the print button from the window 7 computer, the print shows up on the xp machine but immediate goes away and does not print. Any possible reason for this?both printers are going through the xp machine and print fine from the xp machine. the windows 7 machine will print to the laserjet printer fine. Thanks for anything.

I've posted on this before but to share Printers attached to XP computers with either X-64 or X-32 versions of W7 is SIMPLE. These instructions are for the Printer attached to the XP machine (but works in reverse as well).

("Stand alone" Network printers can be done slightly similarly BTW).

assume the computers are call XPMACHINE and W7MACHINE.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your W7 machine ensure you can "See" the Printer share.

Now on the W7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the W7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) Portname is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now W7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network stand alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.


If the printer is on the W7 machine and you want to print on the XP machine then do the same instructions on the XP machine --
port name in this case will be \\W7MACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

Thanks Jimbo - This works great. It helps to run the network printer search and make sure that (1) you can see the printer on the network PC and get the correct path to use when setting up the "Local Printer" fix. Good job.

Hello all, Im going nuts trying to connect to my printer in my house via wireless network. We have a Lexmark P4350 that is connected via usb to the home CPU.

And we have One other CPU and 3 laptops that are able to print from that printer over our wireless network in our house. Well, I got a new laptop for Christmas that has W7 and have installed the printer on the network, I also downloaded the new driver for the vista x64 version cjs4300EN driver per Lexmark website. No go,

I then did live chat with lexmark, and had them do remote access. They were finally able to get the printer installed, and driver installed, and it shows in my preinter set up with a green check mark and says its ready. But when we do a test print, or any other kind of print job, It looks like its working, but then Lexmark window comes up and says, "Cannot Communicate with printer" They then gave up.

I have followed the instructions above, which are great, and when I get to the part where you enter the printer and share name, (which I went and wrote down from the hope CPU) It tells me, that already exist . Which it does, because its set up right, and shows its on my laptop. It just wont communicate.

Im at a loss on what else to try as the Lexmark remote access tech couldn't even figure it out.

Any one have any other suggestions.

Hey Mobley - go back and repeat the process. When you get to "Choose a printer port" in Windows 7 "Add a Printer" - select "Use and existing Port" instead of trying to create a new one and select the Lexmark.

When using Jimbo's steps - It is also important that you use the correct path (\\yourCPU\lexmarkname) for the printer on the CPU recognized by Windows 7 when it searches wirelessly for available printers on the network.

I had success using this method to create a new local port and then it quit working for some reason. I went back to repeat the process and got the "it already exists" message like you did. I repeated the process and chose "Use an existing port" and found the printer I wanted to use - it worked.

But, if the Windows 7 laptop can not "see" the available printers on the CPU in the house - you have another network/configuration problem and these steps will not work.
