Windows 7 network printing
Jimbo,
Your solution worked perfectly. Thanks!
Jimbo,

Hi,
I've had the same problem that Jimbo seemed to have fixed a few above this one, I tried his fix and it works fine until you turn off the W7 laptop, when you switch on again it sends documents to the printer but they just sit in the queue, seems to think the printer is offline. I have to reinstall the printer to make it work
Any ideas? It's driving me crazy
best regards
Firstly, sorry for the bump.
Jimbo's trick worked well, I have a HP 1210 connected to an XP Machine. I successfully shared it to two Windows 7 Laptops over wifi, then I went to my Vista laptop.
I got as far as creating a local port, then entering \\machine name\printer name, then the cat jumped up and pressed something It got cancelled in between creating the port and adding the printer.
I lost the screen, and when I try to recreate the connection it says \\machine name\printer name already exists - which makes sense. But I can't go any further. Where could I find the local port I've already created in order to add the printer?
I had this problem as well, but without the cat.
If you look at the screen when you have been told that the port already exists, you will see that the port you need is actually there already, just waiting for you to use it (well, it was for me, anyway).

hi jimbo, im experiencing a similar problem.
I have a 7 machine i want to add a printer from my networked XP machine, and the XP machine is connected to my printer via a usb to serial plug adapter, owrks great from the xp machine.
I have tried and failed at adding via network from 7 machine.
I have just tried plugging the printer into the 7 machine, printer and devices shows an IEE-1284 controller, i try to add a printer and use the virtual printer port for usb, it installs and says its working, but it wont print anything.
any hints or help greatly appritiated.

I tryed you method and I get 'network name cannot be found'
I do see the shared files on the xpmachine when I go to start and enter \\xpmachine but if I add \\xpmachine\sharedprinter nothing is found.
any ideas?

Well, what if your network is called something else?
Obviously the names given are examples only, I have "heisdeadjim" as mine so I changed the appropriate name
That, and have you shared the printer on the host?
