Quick Question About Routers vs. Modems

I've been off the internet for the weekend, but I believe that we've solved the problem by bypassing the router (which seems to have stopped working) and connecting my computer directly to the modem. My internet connection seems very slow, though, now that we've got it up and running...

Is it normal for there to be such a decrease in internet speed when I'm working without a router?

    Hi Wrinkledlion,

    The quick answer is 'no'.

If anything it should be split-seconds quicker, given that there is less ground to traverse between your PC and your Gateway (modem).

Where there any configuration changes made other than the physical ones of pulling out the router and reconnecting the cable direct to the modem?

The Cox guy replaced a short segment of cable that had a kink in it.

Thanks for letting us know that you are all fixed. This was the solution if I am understanding correctly? Faulty hardware.... it happens to us all. :)

EDIT - Or was this in answer to my question about configuration changes?
