It's nice to know that after THREE years, everybody else is still having the same problem with Windows Remote Assistance, and Microsoft is still unwilling or unable to lift a finger to help all of the users of Windows7 get around this problem...Particularly, when it used to work so well.

Some of us have aging parents that need assistance on a more-than-frequent basis, and one of the great Win7 tools that provided this access appears to still be nonfunctional after 3+ years of complaining.

And, yes, all of the recommended settings and procedures that I've followed in this thread have been tried. And since it used to work just fine, I have to assume that something either in Microsoft Windows update, or in the product itself has been intentionally disabled. (Also interesting that the Network Evaluation Tool is no longer supported or available.)

Since I WON'T be upgrading to Windows-8 and its bubble-gum interface, I guess I'll have to purchase a 3rd-party solution.

Teamviewer is free for the personal use that you described and it does so much more the MS's RA - like reboot the remote computer into the safe mode and still be able to remote in.

    edit:
I also install LogMeIn Free for those times when I need to manually install an upgrade to Teamviewer.

    edit2:
I also use Teamviewer's smartphone app so that I can see (or control) another users computer from my phone... with 4G, I can do voice and data at the same time.
