Is this the same computer?
Yes it is. I have called one computer A and another B. As I said before I have been told only one network can be enabled at any one time on WIN XP and so Previously with WIN XP I would disable the Internet connection before enabling the ethernet LAN connection then after sharing the info I would disable LAN and enable the Internet. This method allowed me to use a single port modem an keep my work computer (B) away from the internet and clean from viruses etc. I am wondering if this set-up will be possible with WIN XP to a WIN7.
You have to make sure both computers belong to the same network name example "my network" in "system properties" "computer name" it will not work unless they are the same workgroup XP uses default name of "MSHOME" and 7 uses "WORKGROUP" so change these to belong to the same group
I think that there is a modem being used here and not a router what good is a router with only one port what's it gonna route you really need a router here.
"Internet Connection disabled" is done by going to Start>Network connections>Right click on a connection> choose enable or disable. I can only have one network functioning at any one time (the internet connection is considered a network connection) so I enable the one I want to use and disable the one I don't want. My one port modem is called a modem/router (I would assume a router would have 2 or more ports) but I would suggest that the internet portion of my problem is just leading everyone astray, so lets drop it, as it was just to give the bigger picture. Both computers have the workgroup name SWEET. The LAN connection is Ethernet PCL card to Ethernet PCL card cross over cable. As I mentioned this connection was perfect for a WINXP to WINXP connection but I would like to have suggestions if possible on how to get a WINXP to WIN7 connection to work. Thanks in advance.
Ok well it's not really an Internet Connection that you are disabling, it's the adapter type. Disabling internet can be either filtering incoming/outgoing requests or a setting from your modem/router.
Anyway can you go into Device Manager. and screen shot these:
1) Your wireless card's Resource tab in Properties.
2) Your 10/100 Ethernet card's Resource & Teaming tabs in Properties.
I wouldnt think these could tell, but something is locking your adapters togerther allowing only one to work at a time.
Spuddy, can you make a screenshot of your "Network Connections", the one that says "Local Areal Connection 1", "Local Areal Connection 2", and so on... please make screenshots of both computers. That would help A LOT
