wireless won't see wired. wired sees wireless

    network sequence.

Verizon DSL Modem bridged to Cisco wrt57g router (which handles the wireless) and then a 8 port switch which all but the laptop is plugged into. wired machines can see and interact with laptop, laptop can see wired machines but can not log in to any across network. (network not found)

the wireless shows the name of the network, wired does not.

also, is there just anyway to reset network settings to start fresh? I don't even want to get into this homegroup thing (which I seem to have 4 of and they all have the same name, what ever happened to workgroups you could name?)

    Welcome to the forum Avix.

To get out of those Homegroups just leave them all by following this guide. Homegroup network only works with Windows 7 machines.
    Homegroup - Leave

If you have other Op systems in your network you have to use either the Work or Public file sharing options. If you need to reset you can either use ipconfig commands or just reset the router and modem then follow the set up procedure for your router.
ipconfig - Windows Command Line Utility

Network Location - Set as Home, Work, or Public Network

ah, ok, got all that done. I'm also running a Linux network with Samba, they seem to pick that up fine. but I still can't access any of my libraries or other Win7 machines from my win7 laptop, but can access the laptop from other win7 machines.

Are there other types of Op systems being used in the LAN,...XP, Vista?

Assuming there are only Windows 7 machines on the LAN. On the laptop, check the Advanced Settings Window and make sure that all settings look like the pictures below. Especially the ones concerning network discovery and password protected sharing.

did all that. it can see then in the network folder for example. but not log into them. I am ignoring the linux shares with all this for now.

and it just got more strange. now I can't set my personal folder to share. beginning to wonder if it might not just be easier to wipe and reinstall and try again from scratch

    Hey,

This is what i did one time, leave the home group an all the machines. Turn off all machines but one and create a home group, then have all clients join.
